Bad publicity for Serena and Qatar tennis

Lone_Ranger
By Lone_Ranger

Qatar's top sports officials are doing their best to promote the country as a top event sports hub, particularly for football, tennis, athletics, golf and motorsport. However, the local print media in Doha is trying its best to spoil the country's name as well as reputations of top international players who come here participate.

Consider the title given in the sports page of one of the newspapers today (Monday, October 26, 2009). "Naked ambition...." this work is in extremely poor taste. It is an attempt to tarnish Serena Williams' reputation and in directly criticise Qatar Tennis Federation for bringing here such players.

What Serena Williams does off the tennis court is her private matter. Journalists don't have the right to sit on a high horse and pass judgement on the morals, ethics and social mores of people in public life. As they say, 'what is good for one person may not be good for another'.

Cool for author LR!

Even this bad publicity will benefit QTA and we will see the crowd cheering her this season

so, when r u gonna print ur copy?! lol

i guess, Qatar will allow u not only to bare ur shoulders but also body only if u r a celebrity. Atlast, these rules are for humans & authorities don't consider Celebs in this category... lolz

noms,

It’s then again, with no surprise, the already well known Qatari double standards. Their need to impress, please and even 'sacrifice" their believes, for a bit of fame and glamour!

The world is just not buying it any more!

Maybe all women should carry around a copy of this photograph with them as evidence that Qatar DOES allow women to bare their shoulders..for those times when they get accosted by security for being "inappropriately dressed".

Yet another example of Qatar waffling on issues...

Nic: thanx for posting this pic,,the funniest part is u'l see a notice on the entrance of this Museum to make sure wearing a decent body covered dress in order to enter. Now, is this really a body covering dress & will other women b allowed access wearing this?! weird!!

Lone_Ranger: u seem to be a big time Serena's fan. I don't think anything is wrong in what GulfTimes printed. When she did the nude snaps for money, she should've been to face all this & probably much more.

in line with latest dress code, participants at this illustrious tournament will be told at the last moment to wear trousers so that no part of the knee will be visible riggering a mass boycott of the tourny. Look at the big poster outsie Khalifa Stadium, the girls have great knees.

I think the the journalist should get recognition for such a great play on words. It certainly catches your attention. The article itself does not belittle the QTF for having poor taste at all. To draw the crowds, the country has to invite the top seeded players, warts and all. They cannot be personally held responsible for the athletes past behaviour in other countries. If you consider the effect of John McEnroes' tantrums and how it actually drew in the crowds just dying to see an outburst, this was a good move. We all know there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Serena Williams isn't the first of her kind to steal the cameras off court, many other players (men and women) have been posing to cameras and worst of all been notably dressing scantily less and less year after year for their game.

... who say their lifes (and their families) are invaded by paparazzis. Don't want to be in the public eye - get out of the spotlight and don't take the money! That's the price of fame - nothing is private.
