What happened to perfume bottle Roundabout?
I was dismayed this week that while driving along the corniche I found the perfume bottle roundabout torn up and the perfume bottles gone. What a tragedy. It made me sick years ago to watch them smash the sailboats near the airport to smithereens when they took out that roundabout and made the intersection. Likewise with parachute roundabout. Now here we go again. Why don't they move these wonderful monuments to the side of the road, to a park or just SOMEWHERE? Why do they have to destroy such a national monument? QATARIS-- PROTECT YOUR HERITAGE!!!
The 'bottles' were not actually torn down or demolished. I saw each condiment being dis-assembled carefully piece by piece. I was actually surprised they were pieces and not solid whole.
This is why I think the plan to return them around that area will be done.
I HAVENT SAW THAT ROUNDABOUT YET
I have been in Doha for 5 years. Yes, they tore down the ras abu aboud overpass to build a new expressway to the airport. BUT I am talking about the new demolition/construction that has only recently occurred. Only recently have they torn out the perfume bottles. And I realize it is for the "progress" of Qatar, but does not make it less heartbreaking. My point is that they should preserve these monuments in same way. Otherwise Doha loses i'ts cultural identity and just becomes another soul less city of the world.
I am not sure where you have been these past months but the condiments roundabout (actually it was officially known as the Museum R/A) was torn down to make way for the construction of the underpass leading to the new airport.
This was on the newspapers not long ago and they will be returned albeit not as a roundabout decor but somewhere beside the same area after construction (at least that is what is in the current plan).
Sadly, this is the price we pay for progress.
