does anyone know what happened with palm tree island?
i have seen that lovely island in last year's marhaba before i came here, and have looked forward to have fun there. but, when i came to live in doha in january, a just saw sandy island with one (not palm) tree! i was very sad, but taught that something bad happened and somebody certainly will make that beautiful park again. but still nothing...
does anyone have some information?

there are a few places around here where you can spend nice and relaxed time, but mostly in hotels or drive yourself to the south or north of the country.

koliko dugo ste u Dohi?

I used to look forward to every Friday mornings when I could go to Palm Tree Island, to sit in a lounger near the beach, with a good book in one hand and a hubbly bubbly (sheesha) in the other. A roving waiter ready to take your order if you get hungry/thirsty...a hideaway paradise away from the humdrum of Doha. We used to go there at night during the Ramadan to enjoy the buffet they serve...all for QAR20 to cover your boat fare to and from the island.

They took it away except for that lone (yup,it's not even a palm) tree. Some said they tore it down because of the Asian Games and afterwards will put up a resort with accommodation wherein you could stay overnight.

I'm still waiting for that (ridiculous, isn't it?)because now, you have to travel (very far) to Al Wakra or Sealine beach resort...I'd rather stay in bed than do that 45 minutes to one hour drive to the beach.

Hope they bring it back or something...

I have many brilliant ideas for the Palm island:

It can be converted into an experimental ground for nuclear bombs

Damp for radio active wastes

Store for chemical weapons

Nuclear reactor

Fortress to defend doha against enemies

....etc....

:) i agree with the idea of QL headquarters on the island!

by the way gibanica, regarding your occupation, what would you do there?

It should have a bridge from the Corniche, and the Airport, oh and the New Airport, and the Pearl Island. Hang on better idea, drain the bay and build a Carrefour with an Ikea. A sealife centre ? Or Theme Park ? With a Mcdonalds, Burger King, Hardees, Chilis, Applebees, KFC, Dunkin Donuts, and a few juice bars. Have we filled it yet ?

...and I wonder: What's the point of having a fountain in the middle of the sea? So when you are strolling across the corniche and run out of water you swim towards the fountain and refill you bottle?

The park was nice if a little unkept and most importantly, it was a good fun place for families and tourists.

Sometime between now and when hell freezes over...perhaps around the same time they start building the bridge to Bahrain and the worlds largest tower. ;)
