Doha Zoo

Have you ever been to the Doha Zoo? If you have what do you think of it? It is trying its hardest but it is struggling. We love animals, and we are trying to help in any way we can. First we are spreading awareness.

Have you ever seen people throw things at animals? Do you think that is right? If you don't, then don't do it and tell other people to stop if you see it.

What do you think of the Doha Zoo???

I conducted a 6 week environmental enrichment program for the hamadryas baboons as part of my final year dissertation at university and studied the effects on the animal's behaviour. Even though their overall health improved, fighting amongst the males decreased, the begging behaviour almost completely stopped and the evironment allowed for them to display natural behaviours - the day after my study was completed the zo removed everything. The reason - it was quicker to just put the food in a pile rather then scatter feed. They also removed the hay piles because the keepers had to sweep it all back into a pile every morning.

The zoo keepers told me to give the monkeys unopened bags of crisps and popcorn as enrichment - not something as a welfare student I actually listened too though!

The first thing that needs addressing is education - of the public AND the "keepers". Why not look at designing posters explaining WHY you shouldn't feed the animals or WHY you shouldn't bang the glass etc. These can be translated into different languages and people might pay more attention if they know the reason behind the rules. "If you give the animal's carrier bags, they'll eat them, choke and die and then there won't be any animals left" works better then "Don't feed the animals".

Little leaflets offering education about the different animals would help as well. Feeding guides, enrichment programs, enclosure design... It could all be done as a project that could be given to the zoo to offer alternatives to what they already have and do.

All of these will help improve the animals lives without costing anything.

Personally, the animal I feel deserves the most attention at the moment is the crocodile.

Have you ever heard about zoo animal enrichment? Do you know what it is and how it helps animals?

If u do plz tell us wat u know..

If not learn more through this website, on wat this zoo is doing for their animals.

http://www.honoluluzoo.org/enrichment_activities.htm

Or if u cant be bothered reading check out this video. This shows how they're entertaining the animals and getting them active. We hope to get the animals active at the Doha Zoo in a similar kinda way thats safe, even though we obviously dont have the quality or habitats the Oregon Zoo possess. Even so, we WILL do everything in our power to make sure these animals are safe and happy.

Thanks,

The Zooperz

Animals are like us humens. They need a family, a place to live, food, water and love. When your are a baby, your parents sometimes give you obstacles like when you first learn how to walk, they put something in front of you so that you can use you baby senses to go around the object. Well, that's what we, the Zooperz, are trying to do. We are going to make obstacals for the animals to help them in their life. For example, our school, The American School of Doha, raised enough money for the Doha Zoo. We used that money to buy a net for the elephant which holds the elephant's food up high so that the elephant to use it's elephant senses in getting it. This will also encourage his into moving a little because no one liks to be stuck in a cage. To help make The Doha Zoo a better place, we need you to give us suggestions on how to make items like the net ASAP.

And one last thing, if you are actualy wanting to make a difference at the Doha Zoo, tell us your ideas and we can help you for getting to your goal. Talk to your friends and try getting them into making a difference too.

But when I read this thread, it makes me think twice to go there coz I don't want my children to see this animals are in terrible situation...I haven't been there but according to you guys, I don't find going there a fruitful one? is it?

...they should not have it for the heck of it if they can't provide equal opportunity to all the animals. They should look at some serious healthcare reforms and should try and get them all a good housing scheme.

Otherwise they should stop acting and just eat all of them.

Hey i went there very recently and was,am disgusted. The place is dire. It is a hole. the animals all looked depressed. Qatar is such a rich nation. If they are going to bother with a zoo they should make ti a good one. Otherwise.........don't bother. Some say you can judge a society by how it treats animals.....

that aside....the treatment of many ppl here is far from decent so it's ahrdly surprising so few ppl care about how animals are treated.

Qatar wants to portray the image of a progressive society....2022?? correct yoru 'human wrongs'....try respecting human rights......and those of animals

We have a voice, animals dont.......our DUTY to look after them

We are a group of students trying to help the zoo.We love animals and want to do anything we can to make them feel appreciated. Remember-some of these animals have been taken out of their natural habitats, and they are guests here. If you ever go to the Doha Zoo, please don't throw anything at the animals or taunt them. Treat them with love and care, just like how you'd want your kids to be treated!

We're all animals. :)

This needs attention. The zooperz come in action. Which animal should we really concentrate on/ needs the most help? We are going to try to help every animal in the zoo. But we still need to choose which toys/foods/goods we need to bring.

Lets save the DOHA ZOOO!!!!!!!

It's been a long while since I've been there and every time, it makes me feel more disappointed than relaxed.

You can feel the animals discomfort just by the look of them and by looking at their cages.

I just wish the government would find time to look at this place coz its so obvious that the animals are not that well cared and the place needs much improvement.

UK a high "Rizks" chimp has been missing from the Zoo...for quite a while....lol

me and you

I was quite shocked when I went back in April, the poor elephant has very little space and some of the big cats had a little cage which looked only big enough for them to circle in.

All the animals looked like they had not had a good meal in years and I am quite astounded that they are still living!

Very very sad to see animals being treated in this way, I will not be going back!!

UK - the Zoo at al-ain is superb. You will feel you are in the African bushes. Doha Zoo sucks big time, stinks too.

I've seen their restricted area and was appalled at how they kept 'spare' animals in shoe box size cages stacked on over the other.

This was some time back, I don't know if things have changed.
