All Doha Zoo buildings to be demolished

DOHA: All the old buildings in the premises of the Doha Zoo will soon be demolished as part of massive renovations taking place at the facility.

The 30-year old zoo comprises a cluster of old structures that accommodate the animals and birds. The other buildings are used as offices and staff accommodations.

All these facilities will go to give away to a new look and more spacious zoo. However, the parks and other green areas inside the premises will be retained.

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has invited tenders for demolition of the existing buildings and prepare ground for a new facility.

Experts from Ashghal had visited the zoo a few months ago and prepared a report in which they stated that the buildings are too old and pose danger to the visitors.

The Ministry of Environment had earlier disclosed plans to redevelop the zoo in the model of a Safari park.

The new zoo is said to be three times bigger than its existing size and once the renovation is completed, visitors will be able watch the animals from a close distance in a natural environment.

The shifting will start in November and is expected to be completed by April next year.

The demolition will be completed by the end of May next year.

The staff will be relocated to another place during the renovation. The zoo remains closed for more than a year as part of the fac-elift.

The park in the neighbourhood of the zoo will also be closed later this year. The renovation is expected to be completed in three to five years.

The authorities had also disclosed plans to set up a new market in the neighbourhood of the zoo.
