Know Your Desktop - Part I
As most of us are using Windows Xp [Home or Professional Edition]. I thought starting with the basics and moving to the advanced features of this operating system later would be a good idea.
What are we going to talk about is the different parts of your desktop and explaining the different related properties to it.
As you can see here, I added numbers to different parts and will start talking in brief about it.
1- Those are the common desktop icons, the default that shows after the first installation of Windows XP would be surprisingly nothing but the Recycle bin.
Showing the rest 'My Computer', 'My Documents', 'Internet Explorer' and 'My Network Places' can be done through the 'Customize Desktop' options [would talk about it later].
2- Clicking the 'Start Button' would open many options for you and everyone who is trying to invoke a service, open a program or customize his/her PC will go there.
3- 'Quick Lunch', you can add here many shortcuts to your favorite programs for quick access. Some applications would be added automatically to it after the installation of those software, while you have to add the others manually.
4- 'Task Bar', you can access the 'Task Manager', 'Toolbars' and it's Properties by right clicking on that area. It shows also the different opened files or applications.
5- 'Language Bar & Speech Tools' can be accessed from here, you need to select it from the toolbars to show it as it may not be present sometimes.
6- 'System Tray', shows some installed applications that run on the start up as well as the 'LAN', 'Wireless LAN' and the 'Volume Control' and many more.
7- That whole area the Main Desktop area that contains everything and the background displayed there can be always changed whenever you want easily.
We will continue later explaining those items in 'Know Your Desktop - Part II'
