We went to the lake years ago by car from my hometown. I think it was around year 89. My parents was a bit out of their mind i am afraind, or probably you can call them a very adventurous couple. It was 2.500 kms one way from Central Jave all the way up to the Lake. Took us about 1 month ... 5 days stayed there and the rest just visiting each cities en route. Will never suggest you to do that. You can fly from Singapore direct to Medan.
