Here’s how you can keep your kids safe in the water this summer

The cold spell that had Qatar in its clasp is over and one could safely say that we’re inching towards summer. Temperatures have begun to soar and cravings for fresh juices, ice creams and a cool dip have started to set in among many.

Yes, summer is, for sure, coming and family trips to the beach, to the pool, to the Aqua Park are going to be a plenty this weekend onwards. So, here are some tips that we think you should know about keeping your kids safe in the waters while they enjoy the coolness of it.

1- Teach your children never to enter a body of water without a grown up around.

2- Never leave your kids alone in a pool (or any form of water to that matter) alone and unsupervised. There might be a life guard around, but remember he is only a life guard and not your personal babysitter.

Did you know, children especially the young, can drown in less than 6cm (2 inches) of water?

3- Never let your child swim in canals or any fast moving waters.

4- Invest in proper-fitting, Coast Guard-approved flotation devices (life vests) and have kids wear them whenever near water.

5- Make sure they drink plenty of water and fluids, for when they are physically active and running about they would soon become de-hydrated and weak.

6- Body temperature drops more quickly in water than on land and it doesn't take long for hypothermia (when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it) to set in.

Hence, you see a shivering child or one with muscle cramps? Get him or her out of the water immediately.

7- Finally, don’t forget the sunscreen and reapply often, especially if the kids are getting wet.

Oh and remember, don’t be over cautious but enjoy the waters!
