Pak expatriates celebrate T20 World Cup victory
Guests and community members cutting a cake at the celebration
Hundreds of jubilant Pakistanis in Qatar celebrated their country’s thrilling victory in the World T20 Championship at an event on Monday.
Organised by the Pak Youth Society (PYS), the occasion also saw the community urging its members to remember the millions of internally displaced people (IDPs) from Swat in this time of joy.
“We are celebrating in Doha again after 17 years, showing what unity and dedication can achieve for a nation,” PYS’s president Qazi Mohamed Asghar said in his welcome speech.
He was referring to a major rally organised by the PYS through the Corniche to the Pakistan embassy after Pakistan lifted the World Cup in 1992.
Amin Motiwala, one of the community members said: “The team played exceptionally well. We are only glad that this joy came during a time of wars. This is historic.”
“My two sons are both serving (in the army) at the frontline. But the news of the win made my wife break down in tears,” Pakistan Education Centre principal Humayun Nasir said.
Some members also demanded that the International Cricket Council (ICC) reverse its decision to pull the 2011 World Cup from Pakistan.
“We urge the ICC to re-consider its decision and let Pakistan go ahead with hosting the 2011 World Cup,” PYS founder and past president Tahir Mehmud Chaudhry said.
PYS officials, while thanking sponsors Khubab Ahmad, Idrees Anwar, and Descon Ltd, also congratulated T-20 runners-up Sri Lanka and pointed out that the large commemorative banner on stage was designed by a Sri Lankan teacher at the Bright Future Pakistani School.
A cake was cut to mark the occasion. Pakistan embassy charge de affaires Mansoor Rizvi presided while PYS patron Abdul Hamid was the chief guest.
