Bread prices

How stupid can they get? Price increases avoided by reducing the amount of bread that you get?

As per the article, if you need 6 loaves you now have to buy two packs and not one.

Taken from "The Peninsular" today (24 Jan)

DOHA • Bakeries making Egyptian bread have come up with a novel way to beat their rising overhead costs which are fuelled by the increased prices of cooking gas cylinders, rising rents and salaries of their employees.

Instead of raising the price of bread, the bakeries have reduced the weight of the bread and the number of bread they sell in polythene packs. According to Al Sharq, the weight of the bread is reduced by around 25 per cent and the number is reduced from six in a pack to three.

The number was reduced in a phased manner, from five to four and eventually to three. Outlets selling fatayer (conventional Arabic bread) have also raised the prices, the daily said.

Thanks for the comment. I appreciate the marketing angle. It was just the statement from the GT reporter implying that there was no change in the price of bread.

This trick is used all over the world. Usually tied in with a label change/rebranding/new recipe. The one that most people missed was reducing the size of a sheet of toilet paper. Everyone cares about the number of sheets per roll(yeah, softness too) and usually do not know the original sizes of the sheets. So less volume without a perceptible loss in quantity...
