History says

In 1998, archaeologists found a well-preserved track leading to a Roman quarry near Swindon, England. The grooves in the road on the right side were observed to be much deeper than those on the left side, which would make sense given that carts would be driven without any load on the way to the quarry, but would return laden with stone. These grooves suggest that the Romans drove on the left, at least in this particular location.[5]

In fact, some (e.g. C. Northcote Parkinson) believe that ancient travellers on horseback generally rode on the left side of the road. As more people are right-handed, horsemen would thus be able to hold the reins with their left hands and keep their right hand free—to offer in friendship to passing riders or to defend themselves with swords, if necessary.[citation needed]

The first legal reference in Britain to an order for traffic to remain on the left occurred in 1756 with regard to London Bridge.[citation needed] The Highway Act 1773 contained a recommendation that horse traffic should remain on the left and this is enshrined in the Highway Act 1835.[19]

In the late 1700s, the shift from left to right that took place in countries such as the United States was based on teamsters' use of large freight wagons pulled by several pairs of horses. The wagons had no driver’s seat, so a postilion sat on the left rear horse and held his whip in his right hand. Seated on the left, the driver preferred that other wagons pass him on the left so that he could be sure to keep clear of the wheels of oncoming wagons. He did that by driving on the right side of the road.[citation needed]. Other countries, for example France, adopted driving on the right as a result of Napoleonic occupation/control.

Countries that became part of the British Empire adopted the British keep-left rule, although many have since changed. Canada, for example, where the maritime provinces and Vancouver (later to become British Columbia) drove on the left,[citation needed] eventually changed to the right in order to[citation needed] make border crossings to and from the United States easier. Nova Scotia switched to driving on the right on April 15, 1923.[citation needed]

It was Napoleon who has handed down the right hand lane driving, all of europe (and the US) adopted it as it would be difficult to change lanes passing across borders. Always thought that with manual cars the british system was better as the usually stronger right hand was always on the wheel. Sweden changed to the Continental system many years ago after an extensive public awareness programme and a lot of new traffic control measures such as relaying junctions, new signage etc. They changed at midnight and the first person caught driving on the wrong side was a lorry driver, 6 minutes after the change. When question by police he said he had nothing about it.

Actually Qatar did drive on the other side until the arrival of the American Oil companies who presented the important people with a fleet of Buicks. The Emir changed the system overnight to the US model. Dont know what happened at the changeover

england is the reason ... all road projects are subbjected to the british laws... like australia india,,,

it is only like what you desire to have or agree and then you apply what you plan right or left most important is that you must be a good driver.... why the highest percentage of weak drivers are indian ,,, this is a mystery

regards

About a quarter of the world drives on the left, and the countries that do are mostly old British colonies. see the pic

I agree with Mandilulur. Driving in India came with the British who used left hand driving. Most of the countries ruled by the British were (are) using left hand drive. Some countries changed it to right hand but India is still using that system as all the vehicles in India are designed for left hand and all drivers are familiar with left hand driving so it is difficult to change it now.

vignale

they may in their small area have the lowest - but don't forget that scandinavian countries are sparsely populated and not a true reflection of the overall numbers (remember pretty much all south america drive on the right side of the road and I would not like to guess their stats compared to scandinavia - bet it is a pretty scary comparison!!)

it's their country, they get to decide where they want the drivers seat alright?

comment to jjj75,you are wrong, the countries with the lowest accident rates(the scandinavian countries) drive on the right side of the road.

actually Vignale I disagree with your comments about the common sense thing in terms of driving on the right side of the road. Statistically if you drive on the left side of the road there are fewer accidents, apparently this has something to do with your brain and the motor reflex part of it.

In fact the French popularised driving on the right under Napoleon - he only did it to be different from the English- until then they also drove on the left

2 Understand tht... u need 2 understand history first... Not tht i know 100% of it, but i guess it sounds right. The Brits used 2 rule over India... they brought in their rules and regulations even for driving, for which till date... its been followed. But if u look at the GCC... Learning and education was cut off to the middle-east by the Othaman's time, he used to keep all the scholars & teachers within his empire and neva bothered to depart education to the remaining middle east... All the proof of this is very well laid in Turkiya (Turkey). And all the scholars where brought from the far west where, he thought (Othaman) were the best teachers and providers 4 education... But sadly... the western influence slowly creeped in and b4 u know it... all the rules and regulations r laid keeping a western touch 2 it.
