Q3. Cost of living?

I am trying to get an idea of what our monthly outgoings might be as a family living in Qatar: Groceries, going out, clothes, utilities, TV, mobiles, internet.

I have found a good link from Expatwoman for cost of living in Qatar at http://www.expatwoman.com/qatar/monthly_qatar_faqs_Cost_Of_Living_In_Qat...

but it is a bit at odds with the information the company have sent us.

For example they say:

Cars- To rent a car on average QR 2,000 + per month.(Expatwomen say QR 3,000)

Utility Costs- Water & Electricity can be cheap; on average QR 100 a month/ £18.00. (Expatwomen QR 2000 / month.... a huge difference!)

From your experience, which is closer?

Many thanks, Sarah

For the sake of reference, how much does a shawarma wrap cost at Lulu? In Abu Dhabi it is 5 AED. It went up one dirham a year ago.

..... that is helpful to know. Well, we don't have a 5* life style here in the UK, but Qatar does seem to be very expensive - there may be no tax, but the cost of living in Qatar seems to make up for that!

I guess we need to sit down and think about this now - thank you all for your help.

UKEngQatar _ why almost all Brit Expat women are very picky about QR 100 - 200 bills when they (or their husbands) are earning QR 35,000 a month range. I only earn QR 5000.00 a month but not picky about peanuts :)

Utitilies Bill will depend on if you live in a Villa or a Flat.

Villa Utilities Bill can be around Average QR500-QR700 in the summer as the AC will be on around the clock.

QAR2000 will get you a Nissan Sunny or similar. QAR3000 might get you a decent brand SUV.

Can't comment on utilities they are included in my rent.

Cost of living depends very much on your lifestyle choices. Veg imported from Europe is usually very expensive, eating out at 5* hotels is expensive, a family membership at one of the hotels with a beach is expensive (and can be googled).
