Prescription Drug Avalability in Doha?

Velvettblu
By Velvettblu

Just curious what types of prescription drugs i should think about bringing over in case they are difficult to obtain in Doha. Are Anxiety Suppressants and painkillers such as Xanax, Vallium and Vicodin available through health care providers? What about something like birth control?

What about venlafaxine

Hi,

I have a repeat prescription (from a doctor in Qatar) for 0.5mg Xanax. I use this to combat my flying anxiety.

Unfortunately, the hospital where I got the prescription didn't have Xanax and Hamad General Hospital wouldn't fill my prescription.

Does anybody know which pharmacy I can go to to collect this medicine.

Thanks,

Chris

PS Oh and by the way what is wrong with the rude unhelpful pharmacy staff at Hamad General Hospital? Dear me, I apologise for expecting to collect my prescription from a pharmacy!!! LOL

Velvettblu I would have to agree with what PM said. I haven't had any trouble ordering prescription meds before and getting them, but I am fixing to order Phentermine and see if we can get it through customs. Phentermine is a weight loss drug that you need a script for. As or the BC pills, I don't know about the selection. I was taking Yasmin 21's and they were 36.26QR, which comes out roughly to about $10 a pack.

Hey chinitasai08, do you know if we can get Phentermine here in Qatar. Would I need a script for it??

From what I know...pharmacists "dispenses" the medication to the patient and counsel them on the proper use and adverse effects of that medication...

By the way, I'm a licensed MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST myself...so "I know"

Cheers :-)

before dispensing MA...good for you.

Here in Qatar, most known OTC meds are not dispensed without a physician's prescription note. If you don't require it for MA or meds/drugs of similar pharmacology, good for you. You're the expert in this field, so we'll take your word for it.

Cheers! :)

You cannot rely on things getting to you through customs.

So theoretically if i DID have some emergency where I needed these drugs I could get a RX from a home Dr, have someone pick it up and ship it to me and it would go through customs safely??

The vicodin would be for menstrual cramps so I suppose the MA must be comproble?

time getting any valium, xanax or vicodin. Even for in-patient hospitalization they do not deal with pain management appropriately here; and treating an anxiety disorder with valium or xanax is next to impossible -- even under a psychiatrists care. If you get a very small prescription for 10-15 valium in a severe crises, they will not refill it within 6-12 months usually -- and then you'll be treated like a drug-seeking addict.

If you require any pain meds or anti-anxiety meds (other than SSRIs which are available w/o prescription) bring them with you from outside.

a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug used to treat pain, including menstrual pain, et al. It is typically prescribed for oral administration.

iT'S A Pain-reliever, actually, but I guess you have other drug/medicine alternatives for that. That's why I mentioned it as an example of painreliever meds.

or do you know what it is for?

Not being sarcastic whatsoever, but I do have my needs for MA for menstrual cramps, toothaches, muscular pains et al. And they (pharmacists) asks for prescriptions.

Anti-Obesity(Xenecal), diabetic meds and the likes which are considered prescription but you can buy them OTC (Over The Counter).

Pain-relievers (Mefenamic Acid, etc) and antibiotics(Amoxicillin, Augmentin etc), they require prescriptions.

Oh well :-)

I have had Chantix shipped over here 2 times now. It's a smoking cessation drug. Customs will send drugs to the Ministry of Health and you will have to go and pick it up. The BC pills you just go to a pharmacy and ask and they will get them for you. The weird thing I encountered was my daughter has eczema and uses a cortisone cream for it and you have to have a prescription for that, when I could go to Wal Mart and buy it over the counter in the US.

I believe that Prozac is the only antidepressant/antianxiety med available. It is over-the-counter.

Ok, I do know that BC pills are available over the counter. I know they do prescribe anxiety drugs, but you have to find a psychiatrist/psychologist to do that and they are rare here. There are no phone books, so you will have to find them by GP referral or word of mouth. I don't know about painkillers. They might have them here, but they might be something you have never heard of. Hope that helps a bit.
