Money matters
Hi. I am British, currently looking into relocating to Qatar (have the job offer etc).
Can anyone please share any ideas on what they did re matters such as -savings, - pensions, -transferring money to the UK, -critical illness cover (have a mortgage in the UK)...or should if I come to Qatar, do I need to see a financial advisor beforehand?
I am aware of the HMRC website, and have looked into Voluntary NI contributions etc.... I am just wondering on other practical money matters...
Thank you.
hi there,
most uk expats will be able to save some. how much depends on your personal appetites for going out, eating out, etc
you'd have to take care of your own pension fund.
some companies provide international private health insurance that covers you whilst on annual leave and naturally on business trips.
both private and state hospitals offer good quality health care within qatar. when compared to a run of the mill UK hospital, it's almost definitely better. (but of course depends on your luck)
double taxation agreement allows you as a UK non-res not to pay UK taxes as long as you fulfill the criteria for a non-res.
NI contributions, not sure...better get some advice
you can continue watching your iPlayer using a v-p - n service like http://www.expattelly.com/?amigosid=64
good luck!
it really depends on how much ur offer is :)
Your employer-covered health care will not extend outside of Qatar. You will need additional private coverage. And there are no pensions in Qatar, supposedly your end-of-service gratuity covers this. It's a little bit of a hassle transferring money but you don't want to keep a lot in Doha, if anything goes wrong, first thing they do is freeze your bank account. Keep your credit cards in the UK as well.
