I need help...

...Quite a lot of it. I'm posting here because I couldn't find another category general enough that I could cram it all into.

I'm a teenage girl from England, and I will be visiting Doha, Qatar for 8 days in March as part of a youth project. As excited as I am, I'm also really worried and quite scared about getting something 'wrong' somehow.

Part of this is what to wear; anybody who has been to England will be able to tell you that the weather isn't always particularly kind here, and we are still in winter here - coming from the north of England, it's particularly cold. All the advice I have been given so far regarding clothing is to take plenty of pairs of shorts and wear either t-shirts or some kind of light shawl to cover my shoulders to avoid offending anybody. Would this be sufficient to avoid causing any offence, or would I have to wear full length trousers and longer sleeves etc? Are there any other considerations I should be taking into account?

Also, I need to get some money converted for over there - converting my money at the Post Office here would get me approximately 672 Riyal for £100 - however, I have no idea of what the market is like over there, and so I have absolutely no idea of what would be too much or too little to take with me, if I intend to buy gifts for family and a few things for myself too. I know that ultimately it depends on my own character how much I'm likely to spend, but does anybody have any advice on this?

Also, does anybody have any general advice that it would be wise for me to consider? Am I just being far too nervous?

Thank you!

"plenty of pairs of shorts" better if u wear full length trousers.. about long sleeves ..ur idea is ok or u can just wear half sleeves .. try not to wear short tops which showing ur tummy.. other than every thing will be fine n don't be nervous.. people here in qatar r friendly.

No need to worry at all!

Avoid the shorts, you’d attract too many uncomfortable stares. Any below the knee trouser or skirt would do, jeans are perfect. And don’t worry about shawls and stuff, T shirts are fine. Bring a jumper for the evening though since the temperature can drop quite a bit after sunset.

As for the money, I wouldn’t bother converting any in the UK, there are plenty of banks and money exchangers here where you can convert your pounds and the exchange rate is so in your favour (that I feel like crying …). You can also decide to cash directly from ATM machines.

Your advise has been very helpful so far :) Accomodation and catering will be covered; any money I take will be purely for shopping really.

Dont worry, everything will be fine.

And that (above) has to be the best piece of advice so far - thank you!

I will try to cover whatever I can as follows:

1. Clothing. March normally is quite pleasent. (Max. between 20-28 deg C) No need to worry about clothing since a lot of western girls/women wear whatever they want. Just keep in mind that it should not be too revealing. A tee shirt and a jeans should do fine.

2. Money. There are a lot of money changers here so no need to worry about money conversion. You have not provided any detail whether your boarding and lodging will be covered under youth program or you will be paying for it. Give details and I or somebody else may give you a better idea.

3. I think you are too nervous but that is normal considering it is your first trip here. Dont worry, everything will be fine.
