Getting e-mails via Qtel GPRS

By qatar06

Hi, I have just gotten a GPRS handset, and have been trying without success to use its e-mail capabilities.

I have downloaded and installed all the required settings from Qtel - the 3 standard data access points plus the Freedown settings. I can surf the web ok, but I can't get the handset to connect to my POP3 e-mail servers.

I called Qtel a few times and of course get a different response every time. The most convincing person I spoke to set Qtel doesn't currently support this feature and had no immediate plans to, which sounded odd. Most others didn't remotely understand what I was talking about.

BTW, the POP3 details I entered into the handset are definitely correct because they work fine from Outlook on my PC.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Does any one know the Q-Tel settings for mobile internet, gprs and MMS to a Gramin Asus M-10 Windows Mobile? I have checked with Q-Tels hotline, they guided me through a series of steps, but didnt work at the end. I even visited a Q-Tel shop, but the agent was not able to configure the settings.

I know that a colleague of mine who has the same model phone as I do, but she is on the vodafone network, and mobile internet, gprs, MMS and web mail push/notifications etc are all functioning.

I am a bit dissapointed that Q-tel being the Telecom and ISP giant in Qatar with all of its baosted adverts and hi-tec infrastructure cannot provide a solution for such common requirement.

Your help is much appreciated

the settings given by mochafrap look good. I also subsribe to Mobinet and the GPRS settings are OK.

Since you are able to browse the net, there may be just a problem with the settings in the email application of your mobile device.

I am using mail.qatar.net.qa for both the POP3 and SMTP servers. I am able to send and receive emails and my email is @qatar.net.qa I use a Treo600 and its email application has very few settings.

good luck

Try an external browser like Opera for mobile.

Opera

Click the link for your mobile's platform (Windows Mobile?)

You can also try to check your mail through the qatar.net.qa page once you've installed Opera. I can do it on my P910.

Let me know how you get on.

I scoured Qtel's FAQs more deeply and think I may have found the answer, but I'm not sure.

According to Qtel, "Mobinet exclusively offers access to secure/VPN and Intranet sites" - in other words their Mobile Internet service (Freedom) does not support secure connections. Since the POP3 accounts I've tried to get to work require secure connections (eg. Gmail) I suspect one may need to subscribe to Mobinet for this.

If someone can disprove this theory (ie. you can use your handset to retrieve e-mails from POP3 servers and you are not Mobinet a subscriber) please raise your hand!

Cheers

there's no configuration message for iMATE's. you need to call 111 to get manual setup.

however, you may use the following settings as a general guideline:

Settings for Mobinet:

Connection name: Mobinet

Data Bearer: GPRS or Packet Data

Access Point Name: Web.qtel

Username: none

Password: none

Prompt Password: No

Authentication: Normal

Homepage: None

Settings for Mobile Internet Service:

Connection name: Mobile Internet

Data Bearer: GPRS or Packet Data

Access Point Name: gprs.qtel

Username: gprs

Password: gprs

Prompt Password: No

Authentication: Normal

Homepage: Wap.freedom.com.qa

Network Type: IPV4

Phone IP address: Automatic

Name Servers: Automatic

Proxy serv. Address: 10.23.8.3

Proxy Port number: 8080

I sent the message and received the following: "Sorry, your phone is not capable of accepting settings at this time...please call 111." The Imate KJam is not capable?

Did you try texting "all" to 2072?

When you get the response from Q-Tel allow installation.

Could someone post the instructions on how to enable email access through a POP3 account? I'm using an Imate KJam. Thanks

You should have 3 internet accounts; Freedom, GPRS and Qtel MMS

Check all your settings, username password are correct

Nokia E50.

I can pick up SMS's but not MMS's (but I've been told there are two different MMS platforms so maybe I've just got the wrong one installed).

So you can actually go to Messaging on your handset and set up e-mail accounts there, and syncronise your e-mails with your POP3 accounts? Do you use Freedom, GPRS or another access point for this?

Many thanks.

sammie i hope you're not trying to send mms to the UK cause it won't work!!

as for GPRS i believe if you're using a prepaid line you won't be able to access POP3/VPN email accounts. I think you might need to get a postpaid line and subscribe to Mobinet (20 QR a month and you get 10 MB free).

In any case you may need to upgrade your phone or add some form of patch to the software. sometimes taht's just the problem.

Send the word "all" by SMS text message to 2072. Or call them on 111 and ask to enable it.

Apparently there are 2 different MMS platforms. There is one that is automatically installed, but if you call Qtel on 111 and ask for the "other" MMS platform they SMS you the settings.

This is just what I've been told, I've never tried it. Good luck

I just tried on my phone and it's working ok.

What handset are you using?

Are you connecting through your messaging account where your SMS and MMS are too?
