Get married, move to Qatar...

So - misses moved to Qatar, blah, blah, blah. Next hurdle is getting myself out there. I work in a very niche area and whilst I've been looking for just a week, I'm starting to think there won't be any opportunities for someone with my experience - at least, I'm going to have a to wait a while.

So - the thought is, I marry my girlfriend (which was always going to happen, but perhaps a little sooner than planned!) and she can sponsor me as her spouse. Which brings me to my question...

Is it easier to find work in Qatar if I'm already there? Are there agencies I can register my CV at, etc. and attempt to get work that way? Any advise gratefully accepted!

Many thanks...

I don't think you'll have an issue finding work here. Check with the Qatar Financial Center, all the banks and the Oil and Gas companies. I'm in the UAE at the moment, and I know there's a large demand for people with your specialization here, so there is definitely a demand for it in Qatar as well.

Thank you all for the useful and amusing comments! I like this board. No one judges - people just try to help.

The girlfriend/misses/fiance has only been there for 2 weeks and we've pretty much decided that I should follow regardless of whether I get a job or nor first. I've been looking and even had a few muted discussions with people about opportunities. But like a wise man once said, "love conquers all". I want to support her in her decision to take a job out there and I think this is the most prevalent reason of all to go out there.

The industry I work is information technology - I specialise in the Financial sector. So, hopefully, there are opportunities. If not, I will wash cars for a living (I'm good at that)!

So - looks like I will be joining you all in sunny Qatar in the New Year. Nice.

Here's an idea. Let her come here alone. That will help test the strength of your relationship. Then after a few months , get married :o)

Good luck on whatever you decide.

If she is your girlfriend, you plan to marry her, and your families are in approval, then marry her. Then come to Qatar for a better life and start your family. You should not separate yourself from this woman. What if she finds another man? Much more men than women in Qatar make Qatar not the best place for unmarried women.

@OP...you would have got the drift already..nothing is good here, no equality, no freedom, no good kingsmill bread, etc etc .... and so instead of thinking of moving here you should rather decide to take your GF also out of here ASAP!!!!

exactly - it is very sexist here when it comes to equality in the work place and salaries

I was under my father's, so I never noticed. Also, he'll be under his wife's, not his husbands. You'd probably be surprised what difference his gender makes.

Unfortunately MM they do that here - Head of recruitment for a major company told me that. If under husband's sponsorship they assume that you don't really need the money and pay you less accordingly - and I have certainly noticed that myself in my job too .

I didn't get a low salary when I was on a family visa. You just tend not to get the "perks" like a flight home for the whole family, or medical insurance for the whole family, or housing (though you should still get an allowance), but all of that should be provided in your fiancee's contract, so it's not really needed.

Depends what your profession is? For instance there is not much call for Lion tamers in this neck of the woods but Engineers are much in demand.

You definately get job easily,if in Qatar. But you will get very low salary as you are on family visa.

From my experience it's easier to find a job while on the ground. I know a couple of men who followed women out, a few who were electricians and plumbers back in the West and therefore have no chance of finding real work (or at least work where they would make the same amount of money) and have chosen to work part time and be stay at home Dads. It's really something you need to discuss with your girlfriend.

A company here has normally two... o.k... more type of salaries.....one for the pple under their own sponsorship & and one for resident pple ie, the local hires,... with higher perks, higher salaries and value for the ones under the sponsorship of the repective company,...

not a wise decision to make, when taking support of your love to get your goals.

But depends on your field if its general then it would be easy for you.
