I've seen men in shorts (and some were NOT a nice sight!). I think after being here for a while u start getting a feel of what to wear and not to wear. I think shorts are ok, but not really short ones.

As for the westerners and lebanese comment...what's that about ???? Have u looked around lately? There ALOT of non-western non-lebanese people who are dressing up much worse!

jauntie, I was referring to lyf's reference to wearing "singlet and shorts to the gym from my apt. ... I wear running shorts so they are are really short!"

And also, while the Bermuda shorts might have been acceptable (if worn with a shirt or t-shirt perhaps), lyf mentioned wearing a bermudas with a singlet, which I understand is frowned upon.

I think it's the singlet that would be frowned upon and also short running shorts, not a pair of smart bermuda shorts.

I would have thought a smart pair of Bermuda Shorts on a man would be OK to wear to walk around Doha. The REAL Bermuda Shorts are actually short trousers and come to just above the knee.

In some hot countries they are worn with a shirt and tie for work!

I don't mean those big baggy things that you see some blokes wearing which hang round their hips.

No idea what the Blue Salon is - but I suppose they, like many places around the world, had a 'no shorts' policy.

But, hey! what do I know.

lyf, don't you think it's disrespectful, if there's a dress code, to flout it like that?

And also, there are potential consequences: you might think you're blurring the boundaries and making 'progress', but it could potentially have an adverse affect and result in a crack down and end up making the dress code more conservative, not less.

..singlet and shorts to the gym from my apt. So far nobody stopped me. I wear running shorts so they are are really short!

However, once I was in singlet and bermudas, I was barred from Blue Salon. Yes, barred. Too 'high class' for someone who was dressed shabbily I guess.

I think men are not supposed to wear shorts in public areas (ie shopping malls etc) but I don't think there's a law aginst it. If you look in the Marhaba book the dress code should be mentioned there.
