G1 is not a full licence. Thats trainee licence.

just go down to any of the driving schools here...& let them test ur driving skills, i mean just a few tests..
like parking, road stuff like that, that's it...then u pay QR 200 (which is 55-60 US $) fees to get ur license in ur pocket! u kno i'm sayin? it's easy get one...cause u got the canadian with u...
i think u won't spend more than 3 hours for the process..trust me..

First obtain a valid residence permit, then get your eye tested (it can be done in authorized optic shops in Lulu hyper), then directly go to Madinath Khalifa traffic dept. submit your original license and the eye test form along with 200 riyals. You will get Qatari Driving license.
Keep colour photo with you, if you did not obtain residence permit you will get 3 months temporary license only.
