DOHA: A national road safety campaign targeting high school students is beginning early next month. Titled ‘Road Accident Prevention for Schools’, the campaign, sponsored by International Bank of Qatar (IBQ), aims to raise awareness about traffic rules and regulations and reduce the number of fatal road accidents in the country.
Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al Kharji, the Director of the Traffic and Patrols Department told reporters here yesterday: “The campaign aims at raising awareness about road traffic accidents among students. The continuing increase in the death rate of youth is a great loss for our nation. They are our future generation and we rely on them to build the country and take part in our human and economic development.”
There's the answer! It's all those kids driving on the roads that are giving the good adult drivers a bad name!
To be fair, targeting kids is a viable solution, though I think they should start with younger children.
For example, teaching young school kids the dangers of not wearing seatbelts will encourage them to ask their parents to strap them in, and then perhaps the parents will think about doing it themselves as well.
I think they did this in the UK at the same time as running the clunk-click adverts.
There's also the argument of "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Trying to convince the older drivers who are established in their ways that they should start buckling up would be very hard. Easier to convince the young ones I think.
