Hi,

We would be moving to Qatar in mid June from Dallas,Texas. Could anyone suggest some American curriculum schools for my kids in 2nd and 5th grades. We are trying in American School of Doha but heard that the waitlist is also closed in that school. What are the options? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

It's not recognized by America! It's "based" on American curriculum. It offers an IB, I believe, which is an unknown in the US. And I'm pretty sure it's co-ed.

I heard today about a school called American community school. Here is their website,http://www.acs-schools.com

Emanr, you will not find an American school that has gender segregated classes. It's un-American!

Hi,

I'm looking for an American school that offers IB or American Diploma. I'd prefer a school that has separate classes for boys and girls. My son is going to G9 inshaAllah. Any advice would be appreciated.

hi,

I'll be re-locating to doha aswell and am quite concerned about what schools are good there with follow an american curriculum and have properly qualified teaching staff.

To the original poster: i wanted to know where did u eventually put your child? can u suggest a good school for my 3 yr old.

that a school that says they have an American curriculum is not a guarantee of being an accredited school. Children in the upper grades could find themselves having attended a school where their classes are not accepted towards graduation by schools in the states. Only ASD has an ACCREDITED American curriculum. Be careful.

The fact that the school has the word 'developed' in the title is an instant red flag.

There is a new school that does follow an American Curriculum, Elite International School. Telephone No: 4981155. We just enrolled our daughter into grade 1. We moved to Doha from Texas this past year and have had a hard time locating a school that follows the curriculum standards found in America. We will be moving back to the states in a few years and want our daughter in a school where she will be able to transfer from so she will not have to repeat classes. We believe that Elite is that school for us.

Please don't always trust what you read find out for yourself if this or any school is the right one for you and your child.

Thank you!

I am relocating as well this summer. My husband is already there and having a very difficult time finding a space for our oldest son in school.

However, I am a 3rd grade teacher and a I have just taken a job at Hayat Universal Bilingual School. All the teachers hired are certified from English speaking countries. It is a fully accredited school through the British Columbia (Canadian) system which is supposed to be one of the best world wide. It will be opening its doors for the first time in Qatar this year and has not yet started enrollment. The down side is that it will go only up to 3rd grade this year.

Check out their website hayatschool.com

It is a bilingual school so students will have both English and Arabic education from Kindergarten. The principal is American and seems very good.

Otherwise put in applications all over and see if one is accepted. Let me know how it works out and what you find. I need a school for my fourth grader too and would like to know what you discover.

Good Luck,

Rachel

I have heard that a new proper American school will be opening in the West Bay area. Not another branch of ASD but an American school none-the-less. This was told to me by the lady who runs the nursery where my daughter goes and she knows the situation we are in to find a school for our kid for next year. Don't know anything else yet but something to keep in the back of your mind...I'll be on the lookout for more info.

How can I contact this home school group.. I really want my kids to do the American curriculum with proper teachers.. I don't mind carrying books from here also.. coz I don't want them to have problems once we return back to the US after a couple of years for practical purposes.

Salam PM.  Yes, I do find it quite disturbing that there are many schools in Qatar with staff with no teaching qualification.  Most schools are profit making so inevitably (sometimes big) corners are cut and it's always the child who loses by being given a sub-standard education.

I'm also very disappointed that the local Independent Schools have teachers teaching English who cannot even speak English properly.  We are letting ourselves down unecessarily.

My information is that the American School of Doha has a majority faculty of qualified and experienced teachers from North America.  The same cannot be said of the other school I mentioned where I know that they have staff there who have no teaching qualification whatsoever and who may not have English as their native language. Most parents looking for an American education for their children would prefer the faculty to at least have English as their native tongue, not to mention the requisite qualifications and experience

Ummhamza, calm down, I'm just putting the information that I have out there for the benefit of the original poster.

Dear SkyShy,

The "closed" status also depends on your employer or your husband's employer.  If they are a sponsor of the school then they will make room for your children.   If they are not then try the waitlist option.  Hope this helps.

diamondgirl can you announce any school in doha that all stuff or let say almost stuff are American? Do you imagine how huge budget that school will must have to offer for American teachers full package in Doha? As much as I know AAS have till 12 grade classes and are very popular and good school in Doha .My daughter is there and she is doing fine. Books which they use in the first grade most schools in Qatar doesn't use in 5th grade!!!

Are the teachers there qualified and experienced American ones?  I heard the standards are low.

I always think that does not sound like a proper school having 'academy' and 'school' in it's name.
