7 Benefits of Papaya

According to a popular saying in Mexico and Central America, "a papaya a day keeps the doctor in the distance." Papaya is a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and digestive enzymes with important benefits for our health and property. Here we tell you some of the most important:

1. An ally for digestion
Papaya is a wonderful ally to maintain digestive system running under optimal conditions, due to the enzyme called papain that is present in the fruit. According to the Medical Center of the University of Pittsburgh papain may be particularly useful for people who do not produce enough pancreatic enzymes, which causes the symptoms of indigestion such as gas, bloating and flatulence.

2. Combat constipation
Papaya consumption as fresh, juices, smoothies or as part of a salad fruit, stimulates intestinal motility or movement (fights constipation) due to its high fiber content and properties of papain. The World Health Organization recommends taking 30 grams of fiber a day to have a good intestinal transit, avoiding constipation problems and prevent digestive complications.

Recent research by a group of students from the University of Karachi, India found that papaya seeds contain high levels of proteolytic enzymes and an alkaloid called carpaine which has proved very effective in killing worms intestinal parasites and amoebas .

4. High in Vitamin C
Papaya has about 80 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams, which is equivalent to the amount that can give us an orange over 150 grams. Recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for vitamin C dose is 90 milligrams per day for men and 75 milligrams for women.

5. Friend of our skin
Papaya is a great source of antioxidants, vitamin C and E and beta-carotene. High levels of these nutrients can help protect our skin against free radicals, molecules that cause oxidation, muscle cell damage and aging.

6. It is good for your eyes
Papaya contains carotenoids lutein (absorbed the sun's ultraviolet rays preventing them doing damage to the retina) and zeaxanthin (protects fatty substances inside the eyes from damage caused by free radicals) that can protect us against cataract development, glaucoma and other chronic eye diseases.

7. Source of folic acid
Papaya is a good source of folic acid helps control homocysteine ​​levels in our blood. Researchers at the University of Washington linking folic acid deficiency with a wide variety of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, clogged arteries, heart attacks, stroke and congenital heart defects.
