QU and University of Malaya sign agreement
DOHA • Qatar University (QU) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Malaya (UM), the first higher education institution in Malaysia.
The agreement seeks to promote academic exchanges in research and education and offer students of both institutions programmes for inter-cultural dialogue and scholarship.
QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad and UM Vice Chancellor Datuk Raffiah Salim signed the MoU in the presence of senior officials and Deans of Qatar University and representatives of the University of Malaya. Also present was the Ambassador of Malaysia to Qatar, Mohammad Shahrul Ikram.
"Qatar University is, like the University of Malaya, the first and oldest national institution in the country. We also share the goal of meeting international standards and becoming leaders in our regions," said Sheikha Al Misnad.
She said Qatar University was seeking to establish strong relationships with academic institutions in Asia. "It is our wish to transform this agreement into an action plan where we will match our strengths and needs with yours", said Al Misnad.
She said the agreement was in line with the university's mission to open up collaboration with institutions in countries which traditionally were not targetted.
Raffiah Salim said the UM has been attracting an increasing number of students from the Middle East.
"The University of Malaya enjoys strong collaborative ties with leading universities in the UK and the US on current international issues.”
