Will there be taxes in Qatar?

By ravibird603 •
I heard a lot of things from my Al-Thani friends that go to ASD. The taxes are going to bring Qatar like the US, which will stabilize financial issues, my friend told me. I don't know, but what do you guys think?
Dubai is doing a study ti impose income tax on expatriates.
THere are some rules that are implemented in the GCC countries as
a chain.
This could be one example.
Since Bahrain has already started it and Dubai is seriously studying the case dont expect Doha to be far away
Why putting ideas ????????????? is it wise
If they start tax most of the pppl will leave

I would rather have one rose and a kind word from a friend while I'm here
Than a whole truck load when I'm gone
Your word in God's ear and hope for the future I guess.
canarybird....In comparison to Ashghal & Kharamaa..and other Govt agencies ...I guess it is.

"I m taking HMC as example because its an excellent achivement. Good. Run in a very professional manner".
I wonder if this is your experience??? Hmm Interesting
Lets take HMC for example...
I m taking HMC as example because its an excellent achivement. Good. Run in a very professional manner.
Now lets take the expenses connected to it. I m not taking about the surgical wastes, or the unused pen/sissor/blade etc that is disposed as per the Medical laws, but the minor expenses like the Electrical expenses.
There couldbe the foll expenses:
Electrical:
Mechanical:
It:
Administrative:
Petrol:
Vehicle:
etc.
Now who is footing the bill...not the users (maybe users contribute about 25% of the expense) 75% of the cost is borne by the Govt.
Not a big deal for a country with surplus budget. But if you takeaway the Gas funding then it would be very difficult to maintain.
Dito for other Govt authorities like Ashghal, Kharamaa, etc.
That is where "Peak-Oil" comes in. Qatar is going to peak producing Gas around 2012 when its last "Train" is going to be online. After that Qatar will not be able to expand production significantly.
That is when TAXATION is going to set in ...and in exactly the same lines as in Europe and rest of the world.
But that is still a long way off.....maybe 50yrs.

taxes are inevitable, however it'll be a long way off AND it'll be very minimal.
I'd say 1-2%
As for corporate taxes, they've been around for a while now.

The most likely tax will be VAT on consummer goods (to be introduced in Dubai shortly) and health tax or insurance to pay for medical care.
"only mad dogs and englishmen go out in the midday sun"
This topic has been under discussion for over 20 years. Personally, I don't think it will ever happen, certainly not on the level that it exists in Europe.
Saudi introduced a personalincome tax on Christmas Eve one year in the 80's. By New-Years day it was history because so many expats quit.
They may be able to level minor taxes as they have in Bahrain (under a social security umbrella) but personal incometax? I don't think so.
Taxes are inevitable...those who believe that there will never be Taxes in Qatar are "Dreamers".
You cannot expect one country to put all its surplus in Oil/Gas development, roads, free electricity, free water, free health care, paid education, paid internship .....etc ....and no taxes (for its citizen).
This is exactly why Saudi Arabia is in a Financial mess.
There cannot be any free lunch. If "x" gets it free "y" has to pay.
The Taxman will come here but slowly.
There are some taxes in Qatar that you are already paying, such as the tax added on to the bill at restaurants, for instance.
But I think the question you are asking is "will there be income tax in Qatar"?
Bahrain implemented a 1% income tax (it's called 'social insurance tax') in June 2007 to help fund unemployment benefits for Bahraini who have completed a university degree. There was a lot of religious opposition to the move, the reasoning being that it was deducting money from people's wages without their direct permission.
I think it would be unlikely that significant income tax would be levied on our salaries here for the simple reason that when countries tax their citizens they are more or less obliged to provide them with some amount of democracy. Americans will recall the Boston Tea Party scenario - no taxation without representation etc.
Rising youth unemployment in the Gulf states and a slow growing private sector means that there are few employment opportunities for local youth. Youth unemployment has been seen by many outsiders as the cause of religious fanatacism, but that's an argument for a whole other thread.
In my opinion, I would say that it is likely that some amount of income tax will be levied in the years to come, but certainly nothing like the marginal tax rates common in the west. But once a 1% tax in imposed, it would leave the door open to further increases into the future.
