Sports Day declared public holidayThe Emiri Diwan yesterday announced that the National Sports Day, which falls on the Tuesday of the second week of February each year, will be a public holiday for ministries, other government departments and bodies, Qatar Central Bank and other commercial banks, financial institutions under QCB’s control, the Qatar Financial Markets Authority and Qatar Exchange. The Qatar General Postal Corporation (Q-Post) said it would issue a new stamp to mark the Sports Day.

BASED FROM THE MEMO, IT DID NOT MENTION THAT PRIVATE COMPANIES ALSO INCLUDED.

this is not correct. it is a public holiday for all (not only government). the thing is that labour law allows companies to require their employees to work if they believe it's important to conduct business as usual. However, legally they should pay 150% of normal salary or give employees time off in lieu.

THE REASON IS NISSAN COMPANY IS NOT A GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHMENT. BASED FROM THE EMIRI DECREE, ALL GOVERNMENT ESTABLISHMENTS AND GOVERNMENT OWNED COMPANY ARE ON HOLIDAY TODAY BECAUSE ITS QATARS NATIONAL SPORT DAY. NISSAN IS A PRIVATE COMPANY AND IT DEPENDS ON THEM IF THEY HAVE A HOLIDAY. QATAR SPORTS DAY IS GOVERNMENT HOLIDAY AND NOT A PUBLIC HOLIDAY WHEREIN EVEN PRIVATE COMPANIES WILL HAVE.
