What is that milky discharge into the bay at the Corniche?

I enjoy my early morning and evening runs at the Corniche but recently (over 6 months) I noticed the milky discharge into the bay in front of the new Commercial Bank Towers. I was 1st alerted to it by it's smell as I approached downwind.

Initially it was only intermittent but seems now to be a regulat feature.

Does anyone know what it is and if it is safe to be charged into the bay?

Yes, there is a lot of construction dewatering up there. the 'milky' colour is most likely clay (About 5-10m down) mixed with the water and not particularly harmful. The smell could be Hydrogen Sufide (H2S) which is abundant in Qatar and lies in pockets only a couple of metres below the surface. Dealy in high concentration, but basically, if you can smell it it's safe - just stinky!

Yes Vasquez,

That's where I where I was referring to. It smells. I wonder if there are any controls on what they are allowed to pump out and where. In my country we have very strict controls. Any idea what they have here and are the regulations actually enforced or do they just have them to look good?

Seen from my location in West Bay: It's water pumped out from all the construction sites / ground water - they start the pumps at certain intervals - look at the corniche just at the GPO roundabout

Hey Saddejaz,

Dust? Really, is there that much dust captured in the water! Is it at all possible? It would have to be a lot of dust to be in that concentration. I'm really interested.

How do you explain the smell? I've never smelt dust like that before.

I wonder if the enviroment authorities are aware of this?

Complain to the Ministry - there is a ministry for environment they are responsible for the sea.
