Friends,

I am a doctor (GP) have been offered the job of a Camp Doctor in Qatar by MIDMAC group with a salary of USD 2500/month,company provided SINGLE room (probably a portacabin!),food, maintenance, transport etc, Working hours (60 hrs/week) plus open contract.

Now, I have got another offer from a Five Star resort in the island of Seychelles as a Resort Doctor.
Although the salary is USD500/mth less, they have promised a better lifestyle...and shorter working hours(48hrs)!! This is on an annual contract.

So which one do you recommend and why?????

My personal situation: Am from Mumbai,India, divorced, no kids. Enjoy an occasional pint of chilled beer.

Thanks
Chris

Score so far: Qatar 0, Seychelles 14

Unbelievable!!!!!

I am seriously reconsidering my options now.

If I do choose Seychelles over Qatar...hope am not kicked out of QL !

Yes,the resort has promised Accomodation as well as food, I guess thats how resorts work in general.

My concern is, with the worldwide recession beginning to bite, it may not be a good time to work in a luxury resort...if they don't make enuf, they may decide to cut costs or downsize.

Now as a medic, I am aware that I won't be contributing directly to the company bottomline9although I would like to think otherwise!), so I may be the first one to be given marching orders...if the finances don't add up. What say?

On the other hand, the Qatari economy is booming(well thats what I hear!) and construction cos like MIDMAC are doing rather well... so why not go with a potential winner.

If the job in Sechilles offers you accomodation and food also (which most of the resorts do). Then go for it. Saving $400 a month in Qatar is a challenge !

There is nothing to do here and it is hot, so you will end up spending money in bars and dance places.

You should not think about it a lot. People in Seychelles are the most wonderful people I have met. They are happy, maybe not very rich but with music, beer, the sea and love they have all what they want!

They are extremely polite, they can stop to say hello and to ask you how you are even if they do not know you.

The place is just a paradise, 30 degrees all year, mountains for walking trips, beautiful beaches and not one single dangerous animal.

So most probably you will be busy with sun burn and small headaches as a Doctor.

Just a strange thing : the driver of the public bus is a women, the person putting petrol in our car is a women, the person at the cashier a women too....and so on...I haven't seen a lot of guys working in this island :-) Since then, my husband is dreaming to go and live in Seychelles :-)

The island it is true is quite small and there is not thousand of things to do (but same for Qatar) so you will be happy if you have some hobbies : photography, reading, gardening...

Life is quite expensive as well so you should check prices to rent (if the hotel does not provide accommodation).

And if you miss busy life, crowds and shops you are only 4 hours away from Dubai.

For knowing the 2 places and would definitely say Seychelles (and I like Qatar)!

No waste time to think...............go to the Island of Love. Qatar is good for family.

Enjoy your new excited life.

Definitely sychelles. Atleast there will be some law there.Employer here are cheats. They will promise things to you but once you come here they will back off from everything. If you go to the court, you get no support at all. Go to sychelles.

Seychelles will give you better quality of life. Even though the salary is slightly lower, you will have more time to yourself and that means you can hang out at the beach more too !

Trust us here on QL, your Qatar option is not good. The salary is not great, you probably will stay in the camp, (I am assuming Ras Laffan here), and the weather is terrible 50% of the year. So, Seychelles hands down !

You are a doctor at the age of 36/45 and you get an offer of 500 USD per month? Sure comparing Qatar and Seychelles is ridiculous. But don't you think offered salary is very very low?

Seychelles

Seychelles maaaan go for it, you know 60 hrs of work a week is a modern way of slavery. It's just nobody is complaining about it, so employers are taking advantage of it. besides seychelles is a nice place to work in.

By Anonymous• 29 Aug 2009 08:54

If am in your position i'll choose seychelles maaaaaaan, that is a very nice place!!! and besides 10 hrs of work for 6 days a week, it's very exhausting. so better seychelles

go to Seychelles. No comparison. Living in a 5 star resort vs. third world labor camp conditions.
