Qatar airways baggage (cycle) fees

I am flying to Italy in September and will be (should be) taking my cycle along on a cycling holiday. However, I have been informed by Qatar airways I'll need to pay around 1000 euros to take the cycle as excess baggage! Is this correct? I have traveled many times in Europe and have only ever paid a nominal fee. The fee Qatar airways is asking is ridiculous! Any info will be appreciated.

Buy a cycle from Italy and dispose it off when coming back, that would be cheaper, if you calculate ur overall up down expense via qatar airways.

Better hire the cycle in ITALY rather than taking your cycle as baggage through QA...

1000 Euros.....better buy yourself a new one at the destination with that amount then.

P.S: try sending it as QA cargo, may be cheaper that way. Not sure though.
