Pack a sense of humour and a stash of patience and you'll soon fit in.

aside from the accommodation that will be provided to you where is also a good venue to meet new people and help you "settle in" you could join community or social groups which are abundant in doha.

just choose whichever suits your interest (im sure there is one that is existing) and join them. joining those groups are really helpful in adjusting to doha quickly as they suggest a lot as far as "qatar living" is concerned also the way around places, people, etc.

check out the Groups page of Qatar Living and you could see a list of all those groups. they may have their own website where a detailed information of their activities are provided.

good luck!

Get a facebook account and join all the groups and hotels so you know what is going on.

Then challenge yourself to go to a new thing every week....you will soon make friends

example

Qatar National History Group

Qatar Couchsurfers Social Group

Hash Harriers

There are loads of social and sports group...so lots of friends to be made. This will help you settle in.

I would echo this, make sure your employer provides furnished housing, transportation, all visa requirements, school fees and help with admissions from the very get-go. Do NOT leave anything to chance or any detail unwritten. And remember, you have to pay US taxes.
