RE schooling, I believe that they charge more the older your child is. For example, my 9 yr old who has just started yr 5, his fees were approx 8500 QR per TERM or arouund 25-26k QR per year. The schools tend to teach from kindergarten all the way through secondary / high school.

Be aware though that uniforms are usually only sold from the school in question. My son's uniform pack was 1000 QR for 10 pieces of uniform (3x polo shirt, 3x bermuda shorts and summer and winter p.e. kits.)On top of that, you may have to buy a 'book' package from the school also. For my son this is another 1200 QR.

I can't help with the cost of a new car, but having moved to Qatar myself just over a week ago, I can maybe answer some of your questions.

My first piece of advice would be to shop around and try to find a cheap shipping company to move some essentials for you. I can only give you values in Pounds and Riyals as I don't know the exchange rate for Australia.

Having moved into a furnished apartment that is provided by the school that my wife is teaching at ( our rent allowance is 6500 QR per month) we haven't really looked at rentals, although some of the other expats on the compound reckon that you can get somewhere for around 7500 QR per month, but you have to look around. We have found that food is quite expensive, especially if you want familiar brands. The biggest expense by far for us has been buying essentials like bedding, towels, pans, dinner services and utensils etc etc. A bath towel for example can cost anywhere between 39Qr (£8-ish) to 65 QR (£13-ish).

Clothes etc are quite expensive also, although a couple of people have said it may be cheaper to buy the material and get someone to make clothes. I cannot, however, confirm or deny this.

Transportation of the public kind is very limited....there are a few public buses but mostly taxi's are used. There are two trains of thought on taxi's....use the official licensed ones(easily recognisable as they are all turqouise in colour), or use unofficial taxi's. These are usually guys hanging around the malls etc who will come to you and ask if you want a taxi. If you use thse guys, negotiate a price before you set off. As a general rule of thumb, you shouldnt pay more than 40 QR to get from anywhere to anywhere.
