Hmmm...are there local beggars in Qatar?
By heero_yuy2 •
My flatmate, who was a former Saudi expatriate, told me that there were plenty of local beggars in Saudi Arabia. He also mentioned that there were now at least plenty of Saudi locals who employ themselves as taxi drivers and such as a way of 'Saudization'. And at least it's easy to portray that Saudization will work with such locals who really need a job badly for their own and for their country.
Now I was wondering if there were locals in Qatar who were a little of less fortunate and such. Maybe that'll help to implement more of the proposed Qatarization.
So back to my question. Do we have locals in Qatar who were less fortunate?
If that was a "test" for me and my husband and "that must be Aladdin in disguise"---
I only need one wish---here it goes---POOF--your gone!
My wish has been granted! :)
Why do you think most Qatari youth live at home they have to they can't afford to live on their own as they get paid much less than expats, pay is sometimes 1/4 of a Westerner even with a western degree. My sister-in-law helps people in need and because of the recent destruction of affordable housing many especially widows or divorcees are really in a pickle. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean there aren't any. There are some agencies they can ask for help but its not like they hand out money.
no i contradict to ... that... Giving alms counts but making these people lazy, helping them to commit mistakes, giving them chances to cheat people...is not acceptable...
it's wont made u the richest either by lossing 5 or 10rials for that...
ill just comment to cynob post dated 10/02/2009 - 11:35am
Perhaps that was just only a test for you and your husband....
that must be ALADDIN in disguise...!!!
oh my... you'd supposed to help coz ull then be ask to make 3 wishes... and making all them come true..!!!

Not all qatari born with golden spoon, if you like to know where are the lees fortunate Qatari, come to Al Markhiya. I think they are Qatari.

yes mairiam is right... qataries didnt pay electric, water , and they have free house... even your not graduate ,, govt give them work even security but the salary is enough for them to live.... so what else could it be for them to become beggars,,,,,,,,,,
It looked like scam---felt like a scam...good to know it is what it is and we did not fall for it!
there shouldn't be any beggars anyway as it's illegal.
There are organizations set up to help these individuals.

Giving alms counts but making these people lazy, helping them to commit mistakes, giving them chances to cheat people...is not acceptable...that is why there is charity institution, we give money in there and they give it to those who are needy.

Hmm, if your intention is pure in giving alms thats all that counts. If you want to give money, do it. If not, leave them be.

Good to know we aren't the only ones.
approached once in the similar fashion at Dasman S/m parking area and prima facie, he was driving a saudi registered car but looking an asian man with family/kids inside the car. I referred him to check with Qatar charity and shown him the location as well.
Have you heard of others being approached in this manner?
Or have others experienced the same sort of scenario?
Neither time did my husband give any money--it was kind of odd.
There was one thread about this guy asking for help of the same story last year...
"There's nothing we can do to change the past, if it teaches you a lesson profit from it then, forget it."
Beware of the modos operandi of this guys, and if Saudi, we are talking of Qataries here, and even so, you can tell them that it is prohibited, and you can report htm to the authority, and / or refer them to charity, don't be hooked by this one, tell them to go to charity... and they are not maybe even Saudi, know this people...

Just yesterday evening around 5:00 p.m., my husband and I were out of our car and in front of our villa (located across from the airport). A man in a thobe driving a new Nissan stopped his car and asked if we had any money. There were two women in abayas and two small children in car with this man. He explained, in English, that he had to get his car here from Saudi and needed money. My husband told him that he didn't have any extra cash. He then rolled up his window and left.
My husband said that this was the second time he has been approached in 5 months. The first time was in a parking lot. It was a different man, also driving a new car. He was telling a similar story about getting a vehicle to or from Saudi.
This sounds like begging to me. I was curious if anyone else has experienced this sort situation?
Most often those begging house to house during Ramadan are other Arabs. In Saudi, it's different from Qatar, As i can say, Qatar is almost free for all Qataries, from medical, to schools, electricity and water, what more could we ask from the Goodness of our Emir and the Government? God Bless the leaders of this country...
This is why i love Qatar, and i am willing do do everything for the good of this country...

Begging in Qatar is prohibited.. There are no Qatari beggars, there are some poor but not begging, because, all WIDOWS, DIVORCED, AGED, ORPHANED,DISABLED, and even those their fathers are in jail, were given a salary/pension monthly,By the government, and there are many charity institutions that they can be referred to.

many a time they ask for financial assistance or ALMS,
I guide them to contact Qatar Charity office for proper solution of their problems rather asking various people for small help.
I have noticed that Qatar charity issues vouchers to lower income group families (local or expat not sure) to support them financially.
I have come across one near Matar Kadeem. He is a thoroughbred qatari :). But he is not your typical beggar. He is a little loose in the head and begs only food. I was very sad to see his condition.
Life is Beautiful...Indeed!
Begging has become a lucrative job for many here in Qatar, but they are not Qataris.
A lot of Qataris do hold junior positions in government offices. We have Qatari drivers, secretaries, file clerks etc. Due to Qatarization Qataris are given preference in government sectors so that they will have jobs. It is true, not all Qataris have money, some cant even afford to live but you wont find them begging on the street as it is far easier for them to get government handouts and charity.

Saudis are now working as security guards and taxi drivers. Yes, there are some beggars also, but this is true in all society.
I am sure that there are many who live under the poverty line in Qatar also.
until now i have not seen any local begger yet....
there are some, they come out during ramadan but not sure if they are qataris or other arab nationals!
I dont know wehtehr they are Qatariss....but women clad in black burqa dress asking for alms..I have seen them. but they are very much careful, not to ask in public. They just approach ony one person in a car park, and begging.
Voldemort is right, I also mentioned in these columns. Qatari boys thinks they are "born managers". Though they are in 20s, they cannot work like an office job under an expatriate boss
A couple of nos. came to knock our door, but according to my husband, they're never a locals coz of their accent and probably from other Middle Eastern State. Haven't seen a local beggars yet.
But still a lot of them beleive that a normal office job is below their level...you should be a mudheer..
...Avada Kedavra..
never seen and never heard....
unfortunately there are locals who live on occasional grants from the government or charity from sheikhs or other more fortunate qatari families
not all qataris are born with a golden spoon in their mouth as we say in arabic
some are in very bad need
i didnt say taxi driver are beggars what i want to say i dont think so that there are local beggars here.....
there are so many qatari families struggling financially to make ends meet.
the social standards bar is set so high that they cannot take any job in fear of bringing shame to their families.
yel_tiu... taxi drivers are not beggars. it is an honorable job

qatari become beggar?? impossible
never seen before
