Hi there
my son was recently attacked by a Rotweiller. I thought these dogs were banned in Qatar, however the attack has happened and we need to move forward.
Can anyone help/advise on what legal action i may be able to take and what to expect?
Many thanks in advance.
Thanks to all those who provided sensible answers.
The owners of the dogs (3 dogs) went on holiday 4 weeks ago and left the dogs in a 3mtr by 7 mtr alley way. We had no idea the dogs were there as we live on the other side of the compound. One day last week, while my son was riding his bike, the dogs escaped and attacked him from behind. The compound caretaker managed to drag my son away and take shelter in the nearest house.
The police and dog catchers were alerted, and the dogs have been taken away. My son was taken to HMC emergency where the injuries to his arms and head were treated. He is now on a program of rabies shots.
I dont blame the dogs, i blame the owners for abandoning the dogs and leaving them... obviously the dogs went mad and attacked as soon as they got out.
I have taken photos of the injuries, and the alley where the dogs were kept. I immediately filed a case against the owners.
However, i have no idea what to expect here. Can someone recommend a good lawyer?
Seek for proper medication for your son first as there is possibility for the dog being infected with rabies. You should also report this issue to the authorities who will take care of the dog even if it is owned by a Qatari. A banned breed of dog should not be roaming in the streets to attack human beings even provoked or unprovoked. This breed is banned because they are not suitable for this country. You may seel legal advise also.
Ur indifference could result in another child's harm again!!! Irrespective of if the authorities do anything about it or not, u need to have it reported, especially if any reactions or complications arise at a later stage as a direct or indirect result of the dog bite!!!
stop wasting time and go report it, its a lil late as it is!!!
When the bite happen? a week or 2 would be on critical stage wherein u should also try to get contact with the dog's owner primarily bcoz if there's any symptoms manifest on the dog itself like howling or irritation the dog would be rabbies infected & automatically you're son would catch it also. Seek proper medical health, medication would quite traumatic also my sister had 7 shots of anti rabbies injection.
There's a lot of things we should learned any domesticated pet is still an "animal", they act on animal instinct!
One thing more, you have to report this to authorities, let these owners have record of complain in their names so they will learned to take care of their pet when they have visitors or while walking them outside.
Sorry to hear. Hope your son is ok. You are not giving any info on his injuries.
I myself has had dogs for the past 15 years. Before moving to Doha, I had to give away my Boerboel . It was extremely sad for me and my family. We took a lot of time in getting the rite home for him, so that he would be properly looked after. He was a lovely animal, that use to play with my kids (4 & 9) all the time. But as a responsable parent and dog owner I never allowed them to play without me being around them.
Very rarely dogs just attack. They either were provoked, hurt or ordered to do so. When kids play with animals, there is a chance that the animal can get hurt unintensionally. Dogs cannot talk, and reacts by biting in an effort to get away. However it does happen that dogs attack without reason, and I am not saying your son has done anything wrong.
I have lost a friend when I was 17 to a Dog attack. She lived outside town on a dog breeding small holding ,they were very well known Rottwieler breeders in South Africa, and their dogs has won numerous titles.
One Friday evening she went outside and the one male dog attacked. She was killed and dragged to the kennel where she was found later the evening.
The dog has never before shown any agression, and was well trained.
The dog was put to sleep.
This dog wil propably be put to sleep as well if the attack was unprovoked. I have however seen how people in Doha treat dogs, throwing stons and kicking them. Some dogs will get emotionally traumatised and bite in fear. If a dog owner mistreats his animal, it could also lead to the dog becoming agressive and bite. Dogs ( Large and medium) needs to exercise, and being locked up in a yard or house will make them aggresive. People need to know that a dog is a hugh responsability. The dog does not stay a pup forever, and can live for up to 15 years and more. Not all families are suitable pet owners, but unfortunately the realisation comes too late, and the poor animal suffers.
Well, good luck with your son, and I hope you get assistance. Please just do not blame all dogs for the actions of one.
I would make a police report so its documented and try to find out if the dog has done this before. I am sure you could sue but the lawyers here cost a fortune, Qatar gives compensation in a very strange way its like a percentage of what you lost, say you damaged a body part its like 15% of something! I hope the child is getting better dog bites are very dangerous my brother once got in between his own dog and another and was bitten badly and he had to take serious antibiotics their saliva can really make for infection so use betadine and seek good medical care for the wound. I hope now the dog is adequately secures. Rottweilers are banned here but they do nothing if its already here. The last Vet Dr. Penti was raising lots of dogs like that and selling them.
In the UK a dog would be put down for an unprovoked attack. That's the only way to make sure they don't do it again. MAJID is incorrect to say that your child must have provoked him. Certain breads of dog are known to attack for no reason.
I believe you're right that rottwiellers are a banned bread here, but there a quite a few banned breads around unfortunately.
I, too, had thought certain breeds of dogs were illegal to import to Qatar (rottweilers, all bull dog breeds, some others). That said, I know of a few people who DO have them. I have also heard that dog fighting is fast becoming a popular underground sport here.
If you haven't already, take pictures of your child's injuries. Document, document, document. Get copies of all medical paperwork dealing with the injury: descriptions of the injury, treatment, costs, etc. Detail any emotional/psychological trauma your child has undergone (nightmares, fear of all pets, etc.).
Next, (if you haven't already) I would go to the police to file a complaint/charge against the owner. Get a photo of the dog (if you can), and of the location where the attack occured. Any witnesses to the attack will probably need to be interviewd by the police -- have their names handy to give to them. The police should impound the dog until the matter is settled (unless the owner is a local and manages to sweet talk his way out of this...).
Then contact a lawyer. There are several around -- wrod of mouth is your best referral. A word of advice -- give them the name of the dog owner first and make sure they are not currently representing them for anything else (more of an issue if they are Qatari), to avoid a conflict of interest (I got burned on this issue a few years ago, but the lawyer didn't inform me/discover this until after about 6 months into my dealings with them -- a big waste of time and effort!).
