A couple of odd questions on living in Qatar (Music, Mags, Books, Clubs, DSL etc.)

Hello,

I am an alternative physician and I am planning to move to Qatar in the foreseeable future. I had been wondering about a couple of things that might seem trivial to some.

If I buy medical, political, historical and cultural books through Amazon in Europe, will the package be thoroughly checked by the local Qatari customs for "offensive" material? Is the privacy of customers respected or even protected by law?

I grew up in Saudi and I remember the physicians in my family always complaining that medical books were censored and so-called nudes were either cut out or were black-marked. How could anyone find breast cancer patients or pictures of guys with genital warts arousing is beyond me, but I guess the Mutawa (vice police) have an acquired taste.

Is this the case in Qatar?

Are medical books readily available in Doha? Are they cheaper than Europe/US or more expensive? Is there such a thing as censorship of foreign books in the country?

Now, a totally different topic; is there such a thing as a DIY, Indie/Alternative/Punk music culture in the country? Are there clubs or "underground" scene(s) for non-mainstream music lovers?

Also, one thing I have been dreaming of for quite some time is to start learning percussion and drums, can I find a practice space in Doha where I won't disturb the neighbourhood? How about buying music instruments the city? Any shops available or shall get my kit here and bring it along?

I have to admit, I am also very much addicted to music, whether as a listener, reader or (amateur)performer; can I receive MTV2 (at least) in the country? Could I have my music magazines and fanzines delivered to Doha without customs getting on my back about any "offensive" ads that might be in there?

Mind you, most will be in German so I am arrogantly hoping the bad guys skipped them classes at school.
Maybe these guys were sick when Ms. Leuthäuser-Schnarrenberger was drilling Teutinic verbs in her students skulls!

Last but not least, would an aspiring pirate like myself be able to get DSL to grab as much torrent music material as possible or are there stringent laws against that sort of downloading?

What about internet-censorship in Qatar. I think there had been a couple of posts to this affect, but ol' lazy me thought someone might want to repeat themselves.

Appreciate any words of advice or thoughts for this poor music/book nerd...

P.S. Any Palestinians on this site?

hi, not sure if I am able to answer all your questions. Since you've lived in Saudi, you may have an idea on how things are here, cesorships are similar- you will not get a complete magazines (if there is indecent pics)... there's no underground clubs, just house parties or clubs in a hotel. Its of course more liberal than Saudi but more conservative than Dubai- think Dubai 10-15 years ago! that is Doha now.
