Cost of Mobile calls

Mobile Calls

I found Qatari Qtel mobile connection relatively very costly. The cost in countries of South Asia like India, Nepal and even Srilanka is relatively lower. It may be because QTel is the only service provider in Qatar. Can't QTel provide the same service at better prices. As I have observed most of the people are using QTel prepaid mobiles as pagers. I think QTel should revise its prices and provide better and more services like PC to mobile SMS.

Thanks

Hopefully QTEL's monopoly should end by next year. However QTEL would most probably still have monopoly for fixed, Internet and datacomm services. However what would be great news would be calling cards which can be used on your mobile phones to call internationally. I am comparing this with Bahrain where the monopoly reign of Batelco ended. In Bahrain I can call india for little at 60 Bahraini fils per min (that equates to around 0.58 QR I think) and 40 Bahraini fils (0.38) through the cyber café internet phones. Calling the USA/UK in Bahrain is 23 Bahraini fils per min through these calling cards

So your only options are currently is to use Skype/Yahoo messenger/G talk or get ripped off using current qtel phones till next year for more options to come about in Qatar – hopefully.

i think mobile services are the most expensive here in comparision with other middle east countries.

competition will not help. Uae has two companies now etisalat and DU but both are indirectly the same and have similar rates.

the public is being ripped off by two companies instead of one!!!

Harish, i think your comment once read by Qtel will convince them to change their pricing strategy ... if only we had that foresight ... lol

Unfortunetely, Qtel only listens to one thing, the green buck or more like it the blue/purple 500 riyal note (or whatever colour it is).

Hopefully, they'll allow for competition (wasnty that the point of the Doha WTO in 2001) and things may improve
