Canon 1000d is a great camera specially if you're a beginner/ an amateur. Not only because it's the lightest dslr ever made by canon, but it's also a user-friendly camera. You don't even have to refer to your manual from time to time. All you have to do is explore. And doing this is so easy with canon 1000d. I am using this camera now, and I am more than satisfied in it's performance. I am a beginner too. This camera was a gift from my parents for my graduation, just this friday, and since then, I never did find anything negative about this camera. In fact, I don't even want to remove my hands off of it! But one thing is, if you choose canon, you are investing in something expensive. What I means is, if you want to enjoy your camera better, of course you want some enhancements. And by that, I'm referring to the lense, the battery grip, the flash, and all the things that will make your camera better. And the lense of canon, costs way more than that of the lenses of nikon or sony. But, all of what you've paid for the betterment of your camera is worth it! It's like, the more money you pay, the more enjoyment it will bring to you! Hope this helps:D...Happy to answer your question:)

for entry level in digital photography. . .that is a good camera
I am two years now with 1000D. . .and planning for an upgrade to xxD (double digit). . .
advised to me when I was new in digital photography. . . LENS LENS LENS. . .no matter what is your camera, have a very good lens
but if you can afford a little. . .go for 450D or even 40D
