Has anyone had experience in cancelling cheques with a bank here?

I am cancelling my residential contract with my landlord but can't contact him as he doesn't live in Qatar. I've been told by the bank before they will cancel the cheques I lodged with the Landlord, I have to go to the police for them to raise a report but do you have any idea how long this takes them to do? Is it hours, days or weeks?
