ABOUT THE KAFALA SYSTEM

HI EVERYBODY IS TRUE THAT UNDER THE KAFALA SYSTEM APPLIED IN QATAR THE HIRING COMPANY MAY KEEP HOLD MY PASSPORT DURING THE PERIOD OF MY CONTRACT.
IS IT TRUE OR ONLY A RUMOR? I FIND IT ILLEGAL IN A WAY DON T YOU
Kody, ur living on another planet! If ur sponsor is holding ur passport, go get it back from him. Your passport is ur property and no one else. It belongs to you, and no one has the right to take it from you.
As for holding ur passport because u might commit a criminal act, thats what the exit permit is for! So you cant get out of the country.

DOHA: Qatar yesterday issued a new sponsorship law that retains salient features of the previous legislation, which was enforced some 45 years ago.
The exit permit and sponsorship rules remain almost unchanged, but sponsors have been barred from keeping the passports or travel documents of their workers. .....
The new law (No. 4 of 2009) regulating the entry, exit, residence and sponsorship of foreigners was ratified by the Heir Apparent H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and will be enforced with immediate effect.

I am an expat and I fully agree with the view that it is undemocratic and violating ones human rights.
but pls think the other side,,,, what about the employee leaves the country committing a crime... there are cases guys leaving the country taking loan of 300,000 QR.... there are cases guys leaving after cheating sponsor company and siphoning money to his own account in home country.
Of course, I am not supporting one holds the passport of employee. But we should also worry whether we are violating the "human rights " of the sponsor too
Of course it is illegal elsewhere in democratic countries. But you are in Qatar, my friend.
yes its true and its not a humor, your sponsor will keep your pasport untill you finished your contract to the company,everybody here in qatar like that if youre under the sponsorship of your company they will be the one to hold you pasport not unless you have your own visa....
"KAFALA" in Arabic means "Sponsorship" system
To answer your question: Yes its true!
I do not know what this Kafala system is. However, every Saurday in the Gulf Times there is a question and answer page about the Qatar labour law. I have read there on numerous occasions that it is against the law for an employer to hold your passport.
