12,000QR a good salary?

By nadinenana

Is 12,000QR a good salary for a single person to live on in Doha? The company will provide housing but no transportation allowance. Is this a good deal?
thanks

By comparison, Western Expatriate in the O & G are getting 5 times more. So which industry will you be in? 12K if less your food, clothing, social life, car payment will be left half of it. Unless you are not sending money home, or doing travel on your own..sud be ok.

well if ur getting the acco pls chk wat type is tht...furnished family acoo or bachelors one etc....

-if u buy a car on loan a decent car like civic or corolla etc wud cost around 2-2.5k per month + maintenance + petrol == 0.5-1k max ( pls note that without ur own vehicle its like impossible to move arnd in doha)...

- food for single wud cost bn 800-1500 qr depends...

- misc - partying + mobile + inyternet + elec ==1k

So living a pretty gud life with all partying & travelling etc u will spend around 4k (if single of course)at max

so wat remains is savings of ard 8-9k QR which is pretty gud by asian standards ( no hard feelings)

But you also don't know if she can meet those exemptions and the burden of proof is on her.

I am just tired of the assumption that Qatar is a tax free work place - for some yes and for others no. Any one coming should come armed with the facts not the assumption that you pay no taxes.

You still have to pay Social Security (is it FICA or MICA??). No such thing as a free lunch.

We are in agreement I'm just elaborating.....

Maybe I missed something, but how can you guys comment on "how low" or "how high" a salary is if you have no idea what type of position she has accepted. Yes, if she took a senior management position for QR 12K she could have negotiated more, but if she took an entry level position she should count her blessings.

Despite what some people believe, being a US Citizen doesn't automatically grant you an executive salary. If she is making the same amount in the States and has almost no expenses here it isn't a bad move. It may be an experience she doesn't enjoy, but you will never know until you try it.

The only comment that scares me is "if I don't like it I can always leave". Please make sure you have done your homework on local labor laws, once your company sponsors you, you need their permission to leave the country. If you happen to get a company that doesn't want to issue an exit visa you may not be able to just get on a plane and return to the US.

I'd like to experience living in the mideast as an adult. My family left lebanon during the war when i was 7, and I've only visited the mideast for a couple of months at a time. I want to experience ramadan in an arabic speaking country, learn arabic calligraphy, etc...besides, im single and this is the best time to make this kind of move. SO, ALL in ALL, I AM READY DOHA! HERE I COME! HEAR ME ROAR!!hehehe...its only 2pm here in Washington, DC, so killing time b4 i head home to pack more things:) hehehe...

aviduser, why is that?.. first, 12,000 before accommodation... second, what's wrong with 3000-3500 bucks a month, basically NET?

She will need about QR 2000-2500 for routine monthly expenses and another QR2000 for the car. Put extra QR1000 here and there...That is it.

Don’t forget, you guys need much more for outings: for yourself and for us girls… We need nothing ;)

and hey.. "single" is relevant condition and not something unchangeable ;) especially for girl in qatar ;)

How this poor girl who presently lives in THE USA can make her life BETTER here on 12,000 A month.

You can't do it and to encourage that is unfair, unjust and wrong. If she wants adventure move to a different City in the USA.

Essentially you are encouraging a girl to move here be leered at everywhere she goes and then for her to pack it in after 6 months having saved nothing.

AHHHH don't tell me though you have all PM'ed her offering to "show her around" "take care of her" etc etc.

Appalling behaviour seriously shameful.

why I said life won't be good for singles is the entertainment joints are limited and places of outings are few. People move to that part of the world to make some quick 'tax-free money'. Alpha Wolf, you are correct in that US citizens who meet either the "domicile rule" or the "330 day rule" still owe federal taxes on everything above $87,5000. And many will owe state taxes on the full amount of income. But Nadine would be making under the cut-off income and after one full year and falling under either category of exemption she wouldn't owe federal taxes. She still must file, of course.

If u hav a control over ur out-of-the-way lifestyle... u can certainly have a ball of time with that much salary out here in Qatar since ur housing is already taken care, within time, u can also get ur driving linc. & purchase a car, it wudnt b more than 1500/- per month if u take up a vehicle loan.

Please inform the United States Internal Revenue Service that there is no need to worry about taxes here. Someone keeps forgetting to inform them so they keep collecting taxes from US Citizen expats working all over the world.

Check the US tax code and tell me where it says no taxes to be paid if you work in Qatar (or any other foreign country). I've heard this bunch of misinformation BS way too many times.

If you don't actually know then you probably shouldn't advise on such issues.....
