Is 12,000QR a good salary for a single person to live on in Doha? The company will provide housing but no transportation allowance. Is this a good deal?
thanks
By comparison, Western Expatriate in the O & G are getting 5 times more. So which industry will you be in? 12K if less your food, clothing, social life, car payment will be left half of it. Unless you are not sending money home, or doing travel on your own..sud be ok.
ooh i like those linen shirts! i do the linen thing too you know-- linen dresses for me when im at the beach! yeah shoeaddict..according to her, she's quite simple (re: not do lotsa shopping or socializing..hence eating and drinking out). well i say, good for her! QR12K is good enough compared to pressumably, not having a job back in the US (i just learnt that seconds back). i hate and love this gotta-have-a-new-stuff addiction. good luck to your new life in the gulf, nadine!
thanks for asking...."friend" post adverts herself as "hotness with status"...
im soo glad that i share the same "discipline" with you.not that i bought dresses,,,lol but i bought several linen shirts coz theyre so "IT" right now.
maybe nadinenana can help share with our problem...lol
well if it's double than what you are earning now, well i guess that's good enough for you. which country will you be coming from? don't expect to be able to save up a lot right away coz the cost of living is pretty expensive.
well if ur getting the acco pls chk wat type is tht...furnished family acoo or bachelors one etc....
-if u buy a car on loan a decent car like civic or corolla etc wud cost around 2-2.5k per month + maintenance + petrol == 0.5-1k max ( pls note that without ur own vehicle its like impossible to move arnd in doha)...
- food for single wud cost bn 800-1500 qr depends...
But you also don't know if she can meet those exemptions and the burden of proof is on her.
I am just tired of the assumption that Qatar is a tax free work place - for some yes and for others no. Any one coming should come armed with the facts not the assumption that you pay no taxes.
You still have to pay Social Security (is it FICA or MICA??). No such thing as a free lunch.
Doha will not be a new place for you to live in ....
You are coming during the start of Summer.. so your few months of summer might be boring here since there will be less outdoor activities .... ah i forgot you are an indoor lady ;-)
QR. 12000 plus housing is not bad... am sure you will have loads of fun here ... sp. you will find your culture and religion activities more here :-D
Maybe I missed something, but how can you guys comment on "how low" or "how high" a salary is if you have no idea what type of position she has accepted. Yes, if she took a senior management position for QR 12K she could have negotiated more, but if she took an entry level position she should count her blessings.
Despite what some people believe, being a US Citizen doesn't automatically grant you an executive salary. If she is making the same amount in the States and has almost no expenses here it isn't a bad move. It may be an experience she doesn't enjoy, but you will never know until you try it.
The only comment that scares me is "if I don't like it I can always leave". Please make sure you have done your homework on local labor laws, once your company sponsors you, you need their permission to leave the country. If you happen to get a company that doesn't want to issue an exit visa you may not be able to just get on a plane and return to the US.

I'd like to experience living in the mideast as an adult. My family left lebanon during the war when i was 7, and I've only visited the mideast for a couple of months at a time. I want to experience ramadan in an arabic speaking country, learn arabic calligraphy, etc...besides, im single and this is the best time to make this kind of move. SO, ALL in ALL, I AM READY DOHA! hey the salary here is tax free and if they are providing you accomodation then its just a reasonable package but not so good but i hope it will be a great experience for you to work here...there are many ways of keeping urself busy..yeah for us its boring sometimes as we are staying here for a long time but for new people like you there is so much to explore here..and even if you buy your own car on installment it will not gonna cost you more then 3000 monthly depending on which car you buy ..this is the minimum i told you....the biggest issue over here right now is accomodation...for a flat of 2 bedroom the minimum rent is 7000QR so you can guess how much a single room will cost..your main issue has been already resolved before you arrive .......hope you will join the volleyball team of QL members too..hehe...enjoy urself..cheers!!!

For the rest, thanks for the encouragement. At the end of the day, you guys are right, i want to try something new, and working for Al-Jazeera isn't a bad thing, ya3ni;) plus, im an american citizen and i can come back and find something in the states, if i should change my mind:)....
How this poor girl who presently lives in THE USA can make her life BETTER here on 12,000 A month.
You can't do it and to encourage that is unfair, unjust and wrong. If she wants adventure move to a different City in the USA.
Essentially you are encouraging a girl to move here be leered at everywhere she goes and then for her to pack it in after 6 months having saved nothing.
AHHHH don't tell me though you have all PM'ed her offering to "show her around" "take care of her" etc etc.
whats so bad if she is earning 12000 per month she is single she isnt going to be spending all well if she is not a shopaholic then. well getting an experinece and change is also better some times in life. so chill pal be cool.

so, you are excited at this conversation & long to meet folks? well it won't be bad for you then and soon will get to know the local customs..........
why I said life won't be good for singles is the entertainment joints are limited and places of outings are few. People move to that part of the world to make some quick 'tax-free money'. I have been to DC / Virginia and believe those places to be superior but everyone has own motivator behind relocation & you know yours!
I am still in washington, DC and i hope to land in qatar the first week of May:) YIPPY!! i am excited to meet you guys in person! (especially inti ya Mandi ya amoura)...
You Mandi wolf where ae you hidding i am waiting on the road with keys in my hand come take the car quick oh you might need to push it to get it started also
Alpha Wolf, you are correct in that US citizens who meet either the "domicile rule" or the "330 day rule" still owe federal taxes on everything above $87,5000. And many will owe state taxes on the full amount of income. But Nadine would be making under the cut-off income and after one full year and falling under either category of exemption she wouldn't owe federal taxes. She still must file, of course.

Thanks guys for the honest advice!! I have a simple/modest lifestyle-i pack my lunch to work most days (i like to prepare/handle my own food), and go out occassionally. I am a bit of a home-body... I enjoy most nights in with friends -- I like to cook for friends, or have them over for coffee, argileh, and such. So im not really into the bar-hopping/drinking scene..
The only thing I can see myself SPLURGING on is a gym membership or maybe jitsu/defense classes at ABuAmerican's gym! haha...
Depends completely upon ur lifestyle... If u hav a control over ur out-of-the-way lifestyle... u can certainly have a ball of time with that much salary out here in Qatar since ur housing is already taken care, within time, u can also get ur driving linc. & purchase a car, it wudnt b more than 1500/- per month if u take up a vehicle loan.
Please inform the United States Internal Revenue Service that there is no need to worry about taxes here. Someone keeps forgetting to inform them so they keep collecting taxes from US Citizen expats working all over the world.
Check the US tax code and tell me where it says no taxes to be paid if you work in Qatar (or any other foreign country). I've heard this bunch of misinformation BS way too many times.
If you don't actually know then you probably shouldn't advise on such issues.....
Have you got a family to support at 12K QR? If yes, it is too less! If only you then also stick to yr present country as you said you have the same pay there coz life is kind of boring in Qatar if you are single.
It's not bad. Is it more than you are getting in the US? It should be in order for you to contemplate a move. Either more salary or a considerable leg up the job scale.
Qatar's winter months are brimming with unmissable experiences, from the AFC Asian Cup 2023 to the World Aquatics Championships Doha 2024 and a variety of outdoor adventures and cultural delights.

aviduser, why is that?.. first, 12,000 before accommodation... second, what's wrong with 3000-3500 bucks a month, basically NET?
She will need about QR 2000-2500 for routine monthly expenses and another QR2000 for the car. Put extra QR1000 here and there...That is it.
Don’t forget, you guys need much more for outings: for yourself and for us girls… We need nothing ;)

The only thing I can see myself SPLURGING on is a gym membership or maybe jitsu/defense classes at ABuAmerican's gym! haha...
Its really good and handsome amout.. and the company you are working is the best company of Qatar as i told you before right.... so congrates :)
Cheers !!!

I agree with SIDDH that LIfe is kind of boring in Qatar
Have you got a family to support at 12K QR? If yes, it is too less! If only you then also stick to yr present country as you said you have the same pay there coz life is kind of boring in Qatar if you are single.
(personal opinion though)
Its will take care of your all expenditures except cosmetics :D
And the intangible factor is the "It's not just a job, it's an adventure" angle.

If it's the same amount then it will be good for you. No need to worry about the taxes. :)

hey mandi,
its the same amount, but the job is better (im hoping):)
It's not bad. Is it more than you are getting in the US? It should be in order for you to contemplate a move. Either more salary or a considerable leg up the job scale.
