Live in Maid - Going out on fridays

By drivecarefully

We have a house maid who looks after our baby and does the basic household work. We have given her a big room and also a weekly off on Fridays. But we dont let her go out of the house on Fridays (though she come with us whenever we go out to park or supermarkets etc).

Now, we are really scared of letting her alone on Fridays. I want to understand how other people deal with their maid during weekend. happy to take any constructive suggestions.

We've done maids and smelly people.

We haven't done "Family Day" for a while. Why don't you start a post ..

This topic is current TRP booster of QL...let it be until we find something else to look down upon people...:)

Just take proper precautions.. Give your maid a proper safe sex education.. Then let her go out on Fridays.. At least this way she won't end up with a belly in your house and worst still get infected with HIV.

On Fridays but we don't let her go out.., wow you're so generous. You don't deserve to have a live in caregiver in your home.

Why in the world would you hire someone to live in your house and take care of your children if you don't trust them?

The number of maids who get up to no good pales in comparison to the number being abused by their sponsors. And keeping them locked up is abuse, don't pretend it isn't.

The best point made in this discussion is the one by Translator... and I like his "maids" picture!!!!

There are posts from some women freedom fighters and human rights activists here to which I can't agree. I would like to go with Translator which is more of common sense (only my perspective and no offense intended)

I think what you are describing is called slavery!

Yes maids can get up to no good but so can the people that hire them. They are just people like you and I and should be treated with the same respect.

Yes there should be boundaries - the same as you would ask of anyone you employ. The same as what our bosses ask of us and that is that we respect them and do our jobs well.

Put the shoe on the other foot and ask yourself if you were not allowed to leave your company premises how much you would like that.

Just because you can do it doesnt mean you should do it!

Living in this planet is not easy. Born alone and die alone. In-between, there are many problems and many people to deal with. Labour or Boss... humanity is to be equalized. Every human being has sense and also she is an adult. Freed even if they work under someone as they do their job.

Your maid is a person just like you are - would you like it if you weren't allowed to go out of the house on your one day off a week?

If you treat her well and respect her then you shouldn't have anything to be afraid of if she goes out on her day off. If however you don't treat her well then maybe you could be afraid of her running away?

You are doing the right thing being scared. Recall that you are her sponsor, and legally means you are fully accountable for her actions or lack of. Any illegal action by her would simply send her home, and you pay the hefty fines and other harsh consequences.

Treat the maid fairly, but do not relax the supervision of her activities. You would be surprised what goes on behind you to gain few more rials. (personal experience note). You are in face of an ever demanding person for more behavioral room. Soon she will ask if she can sleep over her friend the nigh of Thursday.

Others who brag about their extreme freedom to their maids are naive of what is happening or could happen.

True that the maid is an adult, but that is irrelevant, as the most jailed people are overwhelmingly adults as well.

Khanan, that's what most of my friends maids do as well, hang out with others in the neighbourhood if they don't have family in the area. Although they all tend to go to church on Fridays as well. Sometimes they will get in a group and head to the mall or to a park or something. But generally they don't go out alone.

we allow her to mingle with other house maids in the neigbhourhood on her day off.

she is free to utilise her weekly holiday on her own way but mostly she stays in.

wait for the 'Maid Rights' Activist on QL to blast you for your inhumane treatment.

Another maid issue, and I predict page 2 at least.

Why would you be scared? Our maid does what she likes on Fridays and Saturdays, she knows the bus routes, so as far as I know, she heads to her daughters, goes to church, sends money to her daughters back home and goes shopping for her daughters back home. (She's saving up to buy a 52 inch LED TV to send home).

Why exactly are you "scared" of letting her out by herself ?

Surely, she is an adult with needs of her own and the want for privacy?
