Are you making these 'fatal' errors on your CV?
Have you been actively applying to job openings over months and wondering why you rarely get called to an interview?
The answer could simply be these 'fatal' errors that some candidates tend to make on their CVs.
Your CV is the first formal step in introducing yourself to the recruiter or potential employer. If your CV contains the following errors, it will instantly diminish your chances of being selected for the interview, which is often the next stage in the recruitment process.
Perhaps, it is time that you recheck and examine your CV closely to make sure you aren't making these sorts of mistakes that can be your downfall.
1. Jokey e-mail address
Something as simple as an email address makes an impression about you.
[email protected] or [email protected] don’t read well in your contact details.
Steer away from sending your CV from this type of an e-mail address. In any case, there is a good chance that your e-mail would get blocked by the recipient’s spam filter.
2. Irrelevant information
Avoid giving information that is of little or no interest.
It is not advisable but if you really must mention your hobbies, do so without going into any extra detail. For instance, if you are passionate about movies, don’t start listing your favorite directors.
The same goes for your work experience. Your part-time summer job as a classroom assistant is not super important to mention if you are applying for a position as an engineer.
Many people tend to mention their grades or overall grade point average (GPA) on there CV. This is not needed and will only take up space on your CV, which is recommended to be concise.

3. Friends as references
We get it. Some people aren't very sure of how their professional references may respond to potential employers' questions, or it may be that you worked at your previous job for a very short time and didn't form any reliable contacts.
However, mentioning friends on your resume is a definite no-no. If you are a recent graduate, you may include the reference of the head of your study program or one of the professors (of course with permission).
The best practice in this regard is to rely on someone you know in a professional context and ask that person first if you can include them on your CV.
4. Your reason for leaving
The question about why you left (or want to leave) your previous employer will probably arise during your interview.
It is not necessary to include this information in your CV. It may not create the correct first impression.
But do prepare yourself to answer this question and make sure you explain why with a better reason than "my company car was not big enough."
5. Strange fonts or symbols
In a bid to look 'cool' or 'different' some jobseekers tailor their CVs to include strange fonts or symbols. However, a CV is not the right place to try unusual fonts or original symbols.
It will often be perceived as a lack of maturity and it is possible that the recipient will not even manage to read your CV if their computer can’t recognize the font you use.
Keep it simple unless you are applying for a creative job for which you must stand out. Whatever happens, your CV must be always clear and easy to read.
6. Overly complicated words
Often, the first people to pick up your CV for a quick look are recruiters/ HR persons. If your CV is flooded with technical jargon, despite being related to your job, it may not appeal to the person reading it.
Limit your use of complicated words to make your CV a much more enjoyable read.
Remember, first impressions are important, so make the best one possible when you apply.
