
What you should know about blood donation in Qatar

Blood donation can be one of the best ways of helping a person in need. However, if you’re looking for a place to donate some blood in Qatar, then these are some details that you should know-
The Blood Donor Unit at Hamad Medical Corporation is the place to go to when you want to donate blood. The Blood donor unit at Hamad also conducts many awareness programmes and events that promote this life saving venture.
In order to donate blood in Qatar, here are some requirements that one should fulfill-
1- The person must be between 18 to 60 years of age
2- He/she must be in good health in general at the day of donation
3- Must not have any chronic heart, lung or circulatory illnesses
4- Weight must be 50 kg and above
5- Donors must not be anaemic, insulin dependent or hypertensive
6- Donors must inform the unit about medications being taken
7- Pregnant, lactating, or menstruating women may not donate
Also, medical professions will conduct interviews with each donor. Only if the donor passes it, he could donate blood. Medical history and travel history of donors will be questioned by the professionals.
Furthermore, donors also must –
1- Bring along their health card or valid Qatari document.
2- Get a good night rest the day before they donate blood.
3- At least 2 hours before donation, they must refrain from smoking.

You come accross some strange stories. Whilst working in Saudi, one of my Filipino colleagues was involved in an accident and needed blood transfusion. The local hospital requested Filipinos to come forward and donate blood :O)
I have O- blood which is in high demand as the Universal Donor. I was told that I could not donate because I had a tumour on my Thyroid back in 1996. Which once removed was not even cancerous. I had to go see a second doctor to have him sign off on it during the interview. I have donated blood many, many times since then for the Red Cross back home. But for some reason they wouldn't take it here. I'm in great health and that was almost 20 years ago now.
This is a great way of helping the community - Everyone should participate - It costs nothing and makes you feel great afterwards

9.on serious note it's good to donate blood to normal humans.
If you travel to an African country, you cannot donate until after 6 months of returning. I think that's quite strict, considering the fact that they are always running campaigns for urgent donations of blood.
thats the worst part. you should be in the country for at least 3 months.
maybe they could pull out this requirement
