WATCH: The meaning of Qatar's name

With this view, today's QL Flashback Friday takes a look into the meaning of the word 'Qatar.'

While the name may mean different things to each one of us, here are a few possible etymologies for you to know.

It was in the first century AD that a Roman writer, Pliny the Elder used the word "Catharrei" to refer to the nomads who lived in the region we now call Qatar.

The term Elder used can loosely be translated as "those who are in constant search of water."

Qatar's name may also have been derived from the Arabic word "Qatura," meaning "to exude."

The word Qatar may also be linked to the Arabic word "Qatran," which means "tar" or "resin," which is connected with the country's rich resources in petroleum and natural gas.
