Tomorrow is the day of Arafat

Eid is just a day away and all of us are so busy in numerous ways. The HIA (Hamad International Airport) is full of people leaving Qatar to nearby destinations, the most common would be UAE.

There’s an equal amount of people staying back in Qatar this Eid too.

However, in all the hullabaloo we have forgotten about one other important day – the day of Arafat.

For Muslims, Arafat is the day that marks the 2nd day of the Haj pilgrimage. It falls on the 9th of Dhul Haj which would be the 23rd of September this year.

Most easy way to remember this is, the day of Arafat is the day before the Eid-Al-Adha.

Arafat is a special day for all Muslims. It was on this day that a verse of the Qur’an was revealed which said that Islam has now being perfected and complete.

This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favour to you and chosen for you Islam as a religion.”

(Surah Al Maidah - Verse 3)

Also, Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) delivered his farewell sermon from the top of the mount Arafat.

The pilgrims of Haj have to go to the Mount Arafat and stand on it in order to complete their Haj. At dawn on the Arafat day, the pilgrims will travel to Mecca from Mina.

Mount Arafat is located just outside Mecca.

The Haj pilgrims will stay in Arafat until the prayers at sunset (Maghrib prayers).

It has been said that those who are unable to go on Haj, can observe fast on this day.

Hence, let not the Eid preparations make you forget about the day of Arafat.

Just a minor correction to the above. The pilgrims must be present on the "Plain of Arafaat" and not on the "Mount" on the Day of Arafaat. After the conclusion of prayers at the Plain of Arafaat, many pilgrims choose to go Mount Arafaat but not all do, and it is not obligatory. I could not make to this mount during Hajj due to the very heavy rush of people but did go there later on when I went for Umrah.
