A 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal near the capital of Katmandu yesterday and immediate rescue efforts are underway.

The estimated death toll continues to rise and has reportedly crossed over 2,000 fatalities according to Qatar Red Crescent Society. The full extent of the damage is still unsure and rescue and search parties are still on the look out for signs of life under the rubble.

How technology is doing its bit to help

Several thousand Nepalese have migrated to other countries, mostly in search of jobs. Due to the intensity of the earthquake, telecommunication facilities have been damaged heavily.

Expatriates in Qatar can use the following websites to check on loved ones in the quake region:

Google Person Finder

In the search function, enter information to locate someone who is missing or found, or enter the name of someone who is missing in order to search other entries.

Restoring Family Links

The website has a list of people who have registered as alive and a list of people who have been reported missing. Affected residents can register or report here.

Facebook Safety Check

Those in the area affected by the quake will get a notification from Facebook when they log on asking them if they're safe. People can check the page to see who has checked in and let their friends know they're OK.

Do you have family or friends in any of quake-affected regions?
