How to check WhatsApp and Facebook messages without it alerting the sender…

While social apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger make it very easy to communicate with one another, it also makes it severely hard for you to ignore people without them knowing.

‘Read receipts,’ the little notifications that tell you when someone has read your most recent message, makes it virtually impossible to hide the fact that you read someone’s greeting and decided to ignore it.

But then again, there are always walkarounds available.

Notification screen

The notification screen gives you a preview of the messages in both Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. It makes it easy for you to read the message without actually opening it. That way, you would have known its contents without letting the other person know you have seen it.

But this method wouldn’t work if there were a number of notifications as the older messages tend to go to the bottom.

Airplane Mode

Since the messages you want to check are already on your device, all you need to do is prevent the app from knowing that you've checked them. And it does so over the Internet. Enter the Airplane mode.

Enable Airplane Mode to temporarily kill your Internet connection. Once you’ve done that, you can check your messages freely without worrying about sending that read receipt. This trick works in both Messenger and WhatsApp.

You'll be able to see everything the sender wrote, but they won't know it. On their screen, your read receipt will not appear, even after you've turned off Airplane Mode and reconnected to the Internet.
