The workshop will be the first workshop dedicated to Arabic Big Data and AI and it is chaired by Dr. Wajdi Zaghouani, esteemed professor at the HBKU CHSS. Dr. Zaghouani tells Qatar Living, “This workshop is the first of its kind in the region and the whole world as similar events are either focused only on AI or on Natural Language Processing.”
As to the inspiration behind such a unique event taking place in Qatar, a contributing factor is that the Arabic language is always lagging behind when it comes to AI Applications and Resources. Dr. Zaghouani explains, “Several senior Arab researchers are thriving in various parts of the world in research-leading institutions. They all were enthusiastic and happy to come to Doha and share their knowledge and expertise.”
A great lineup of internationally distinguished speakers from leading universities and Big Tech Companies such as Alphabet (Google) and Meta (Facebook) will be joining the lineup for the highly anticipated workshop. Among 30 other distinguished researchers attending the workshop are some of the world’s leading scholars in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). The international speakers at the workshop include Google Director of Engineering, Dr. Imed Zitouni and Facebook AI senior scientist Prof. Mona Diab Prof, Prof. Tim Baldwin from MBZUAI, Prof. Iryna Gurevych from Darmstadt University and Prof Nizar Habash from NYUAD.
The knowledge-packed workshop will focus on several themes related to AI and the Arabic language such as digital heritage, AI ecosystems in the MENA region, Explainable AI, AI Ethics, Bias and privacy, Big Data and Social Media Analytics, Misinformation and hate speech online among other timely topics.
As an outcome of the much-anticipated workshop, Dr. Zaghouani explains that they hope the audience learns about the latest trends and techniques applied to create Arabic AI applications and generate Big Data Analytics and insights. The workshop provides a forum for researchers to present and discuss their ongoing work on developing Arabic language resources. During the poster and demo sessions, students and early career researchers will have the opportunity to present their work.
