Do you know about the compassionate side of Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah?
Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah is among the most well-known and widely respected sports celebrities Qatar has ever produced.
He is the country’s only driver to have won the grueling Dakar Rally twice (2011 and 2015) and also captured a bronze medal in skeet shooting at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
While his fighting nature on the court is quite well known, how many of you know him for the compassionate human being he is?
At the London Olympics, quite a lot of Chilean fans came to see Nasser compete in skeet shooting. The reason? To show their appreciation for a man who spent money to house slum dwellers in the country.
Nasser recalled the experience to local sports weekly Doha Stadium Plus.
“I’ve been spending some money on charity in Chile. I built 100 houses for slum dwellers in that country, each costing $6,000,” said Nasser.
“I get a lot of prize money from motorsport and I found it as my duty to spend some of it for the underprivileged. Fans from Chile came and called me ‘Prince’. I told them I’m not, but they insisted they would address me only that way. I feel happy seeing their happiness,” he said.
Closer to home too, he has been lending people a helping hand.
Sources at the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association say he gives away all his prize money he wins from the various shooting championships at home to the workers at the Losail shooting range.
Asked about it, Nasser said, “They’re taking a lot of pains, which mostly go unnoticed. I believe a lot in their prayers and owe a lot to them,” he said.
Whichever way you look at it, Nasser Saleh is a true champion nonpareil.
Why go all the way to South America to help the needy?
There are many needy and exploited expats here in Qatar.
Take a stand for them and proclaim this in public.
He is a true sportsman and he has inspired us to accomplish things that we did not know that we could do; through his constant dedication to what he does and achieves at the end of the day. Nasser you have made us better persons too, thanks......
