Qatar’s focus on sports has amplified over the years to feature an innovative range of sporting events in the country.

From thrilling marathons and fun runs, a dedicated national sports day, to hosting friendly football matches, among other competitions, the country has gained a leading position in the region for its sports endeavors.

Building on this momentum, earlier this year, the Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF) and Wega, one of the world’s leading global payment solution developed by Truxtun Capital, announced plans to organize the region’s first multi-game eSports World Cup, reported Gulf Times

In this regard, Abdullah Nasser Al Naemi, Director General of Aspire Logistics and Patrick Moynier, President of Truxtun Capital signed an agreement at a press conference yesterday.

The officials revealed more details of the mega event that will offer 2.3 billion eSports players a thrilling opportunity to come together in the digital competition arena with a chance to collect monetary prizes.

Titled the ‘Qatar eSports Aspire Wega World Cup,’ the online gaming tournament will take place on November 15 this year and will be held every year over the next four years, in the lead up to the live grand finale in Qatar in 2022 on the sidelines of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reported Qatar Tribune.

Every year for the next four years, a 40-day eSports Festival will be run in Qatar at the state-of-the-art facilities of Aspire Zone, the officials announced at the press conference.

“We are thrilled to sign this agreement with Wega, the world’s leading e-sports organization, and to announce the first eSports World Cup in the Middle East: The Aspire WEGA World Cup,” Al Naemi is quoted to have said by The Peninsula.

"We are seeking new concepts and electronic industry promises new areas for sports. We are also planning to launch several other initiatives,” he added.

Al Naemi highlighted that AZF is constantly innovating to become the reference in sports excellence worldwide by 2020.

“The electronic gaming industry is currently one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, with an annual growth rate of 40%. Building on the success of Qatar’s national team during the AFC Asian Cup earlier this year, we are now expanding into this exciting new sports entertainment field,” Al Naemi stated.

President of Truxtun Capital, Patrick Moynier, commented, “We are so proud to launch this outstanding eSports tournament in partnership with Aspire Zone. As a Fintech company providing an innovative digital financial platform, it was a strategic decision to invest in a market expecting 6bn players in the next 10 years.”

The tournament won’t only be about sports, Moynier underlined. “It will help integrate various cultures and ideas among participants. This is a challenge for us to bring Qatar to the forefront of eSports in the world,” he said.

He added, “looking ahead to the next FIFA World Cup, when all eyes will be on Doha, our technology and services will significantly enhance the entire player experience and increase the industry’s revenues.”
