Qatari contractor Al Balagh Trading & Contracting and India's biggest construction firm Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) have been appointed as the main contractors to build the 40,000-seater Al Rayyan stadium.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) announced this on Monday.

The joint-venture was made official at a signing ceremony attended by a number of senior officials at the SC, and Al Balagh Trading & Contracting and L&T Qatar.

Al Rayyan Stadium will host games up to the quarterfinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The main contractor's scope includes main works and construction of the site, following the completion of enabling works.

“The main contractor coming on board marks an important milestone in our progress and preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” said Hassan al Thawadi, SC Secretary-General.

“The impact of this stadium and its surrounding precinct will be felt long before the stadium is finished in 2019, with the recently completed outdoor training pitches set to be used by the current QSL Champions, Al Rayyan Club, for their upcoming Qatar Stars League season.

“We’re confident that Al Rayyan Stadium will become a landmark for the area and benefit the entire community from now until long after the last ball is kicked in 2022,” he added.

Engineer Hilal Al Kuwari, Chairman of the Technical Delivery Office at the SC, said, “We look forward to working with Qatari contractor, Al Balagh, and the renowned L&T, on such an important project. The appointment of a local company in this joint venture is in line with our promise of contributing to the economic legacy for Qatar post 2022.”

Most of the Indian company's closed there offices in gulf .as well in Qatar ...because of bad quality of work , they failed to finish projects.....cheating with labors.....They are mostly using unapproved materials...reason they can't hand over projects...........

Even the subcontractors will have quotas for different countries. It is now mandatory to have 30% local subcontractors.

Portions of the work are usually subcontracted. L&T has the record of performing most of the work on its own.

I wish Pakistani companies also compete in the overseas projects and get their fellow countrymen jobs.

Mufti: Any major project such as this one will be subcontracted. The subcontracting companies will also be Indian-managed. As such each company will have their own quotas as you have yourself stated. They will get their manpower from India. I do not see other nationals benefiting much from this project.

Honestly, this is just good news for L&T. Becuz in India, the govt. doesn't share their pie. They sit on it. They would rather let the pie rot than give it to the hungry. Sad but true.

Accaha. Regionalism is altogether a different issue. However we were talking about nationalities and the point is that L&T cannot get all the employees from India. They have to hire as per the quotas allotted to them.

Brit: Yes, Brits stand a great chance because of their "historical" ties!

I'm assuming that Brits will also be given preference due to the Old Raj and the long history with the country ..

Mufti Shahid: Yes, the quota system is there but the reality of the ground is totally different. Even Indian companies hire on provincial basis. A company managed by Keralites hires just Keralites; the Hyderabiadis hire just Hyderabadis; the Tamils hire just Tamils whether they are from India or Sri Lanka. And then they form a group within the company and if anyone from another part of their country or another nationality joins, they make life very difficult for him.

Needless to say, 'brotherly' country from South Asia is preoccupied with emotional issues.

/Will other nationalities such as Filipinos, Nepalis and Pakistanis find jobs at the project? I have my doubts.//

Every company is allocated with quota of visas country wise. They cant hire people from only one country.

Brit: I agree with you. But most of the pie has already been taken care of and if other leaders do come over now, all they will get is just to lick the knife! 0)-
