Qatar’s FC Skyber returns after Neymar Jr’s Five World Final campaign
Team FC Skyber, crowned ‘Neymar Jr’s Five Qatar’ champions in May, represented the country at the World Finals in Brazil recently.
Qatar opened their Group E campaign with a 0-5 loss against the UAE before going down 0-4 to Argentina. But they came back brilliantly to beat Serbia 2-1, but were no match for Bosnia and Herzegovina(0-4).
Although the side didn’t make it out of the group phase, they still gave a good account of themselves against some of the world’s top teams in the Red Bull-sponsored tournament.
FC Skyber captain Abdullah Al Yafii spoke about his experiences in Brazil.
How was your experience at the world finals?
It was simply great. It was a privilege to represent Qatar at an international level competition. Being able to do so at the Neymar Jr’s Five world finals was the cherry on the top.
How do you rate your performance at the event?
The matches were really tough. Our group consisted of strong teams from Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and the UAE. Although we outplayed Serbia, we couldn’t make it against the group’s other teams.
What are the lessons you take home from the Brazil experience?
We’ve realized the importance of taking advantage of every single opportunity available. We learned about playing together in complete unity, closing the gaps, marking players tightly and other key aspects such as applying pressure consistently during the entire duration of the match.
How do you propose to prepare for Neymar Jr’s Five 2017?
We really hope to win the national title again in Qatar and qualify for the world finals. With professional training to increase our stamina, we’ll be more prepared to maximize our chances at the tournament.
What were the most interesting aspects of your trip to Brazil?
The most memorable aspect of our trip was to experience the culture and traditions of a country like Brazil which has a remarkable history in football.
Meeting people from 43 other countries, including our brothers from neighboring GCC countries, was also a remarkable experience.
